SUPER VEES REUNITE AT THE GLEN

Despite early morning rain and fog which prevented those attempting to fly in on Saturday from attending, The 30th Anniversary Formula Super Vee Reunion had the clouds part and held their pit lane lunchtime festivities and Super Vee only Feature Race in dry conditions. With 21 cars on hand for the event, ranging from a 1970 Beach to a 1988 Ralt, Guest of Honor John Zeitler gave the command "Gentlemen, start your Volkswagens" to get the race underway. The cars, gridded in chronological order, had the air cooled cars lead the way, followed by a second pace car leading the faster watercooled cars. In the true spirit of vintage racing, the race was a blind timed event, with only the starter knowing the duration of the race and when the checkered flag would be displayed. The first car over the finish line was then declared the winner. That luckiest racer on the track was Jerome Peters, driving the 1979 Argo JM-4 once campaigned by EST Guru Werner Erhard.

A tribute dinner to John Zeitler, honoring him for his vision, enthusiasm and dedication in creating Formula Super Vee, completed the day. Super Vee vintage racers, alumni and friends, including Super Vee Champions Bill Scott, Tom Bagley, Herm Johnson, Bill Alsup as well as Harry Ingle, Ray Heppenstall, Fred Phillips, Tom Davey, Tom Reddy, Benny Scott, Wolfgang Hustedt, Bertil Skollensberg and many others took part. Leonard Miller of Black American Racers presented the Tommy Thompson Memorial Trophy to the race winner. The popular Thompson was killed in a Super Vee race at Trenton when his car vaulted the wall.

Although it is no longer a stepping stone to stardom, this reunion proved that Super Vee does still exist, and it is alive and well on the track and in the hearts of many, racers and fans alike.

Previous Announcements

The Historic Formula Super Vee Register is calling for all air cooled and water cooled Super Vees and Super Vee Alumni to gather at Watkins Glen June 1-3rd, 2001 for the 30th Anniversary of Pro Super Vee Racing. The event, held in conjunction with the Historic Sportscar Racing "Watkins Glen Historic Races", will honor both the founding fathers of Super Vee and the American designed and constructed cars. A Super Vee only race will be a part of the event, as well as a Saturday evening banquet dinner. A group photo is planned, along with a dedicated Super Vee Paddock and display area for non running cars.

With almost twenty years of exciting competition history, Super Vee was the premier training ground of the 70's and 80's for many of todays top drivers, mechanics, designers and car owners. This event will be an opportunity for many of those involved with the series to see familiar old faces and swap stories about the glory days of Super Vee.

SUPER VEE REUNION PLANS IN HIGH GEAR

The Super Vee 30th Anniversary Reunion, to be held at Watkins Glen, June 1-3, 2001, continues to build momentum, with the expected participation of at least 10 series Champions, as well as founders of the class Joe Hoppen, Gene Beach and John Zeitler.

Plans for Saturday's activities have expanded to include a lunchtime parade lap of the track for champions reunited with their cars and American constructed cars, as well as a Super Vee only race, on track group photograph and banquet dinner.

1984 Super Vee Champ and two-time Indy 500 Winner Arie Luyendyk has been invited to serve as Master of ceremonies for the Saturday evening banquet dinner which will honor Joe Hoppen.

The Volkswagen Hospitality tent in the dedicated Super Vee paddock will be open all weekend with a display of historical photos and a tribute to the late Tommy Thompson, who was killed in a USAC Mini-Indy race at Trenton Fairgrounds.

The $100 registration for Super Vee activities includes a shirt and hat embroidered with the event logo and a ticket to the sit down dinner. Tickets for dinner at the door will be on an "as available" basis. Send your check, payable to the Historic Formula Super Vee Register to:
