The Ineffable Word (1987)
Based on Wisdom of Solomon 7:22
The Scriptural poet uses twenty-one words and phrases in an attempt to describe Wisdom, recalling the abstract nature of the concept of the Word. The quiltwork form reminds us of the feminine work of God, which Wisdom symbolizes. The background of the quilt is a velvet in rich colors to suggest luxury and privilege. The overworking of hemp symbolizes oppression and suffering, which women have also experienced. The web of gold redeems our shared suffering and symbolizes truth and interconnectedness. Collage and embroidery. 40" x 30".
