Firebird Descending (1997)

Love came down, crashing, thrashing,
talons tearing roots 'round
rocks of willful promise grown.

It seized us, gift of great joyful color,
seeping into crevices of dark desperation,
dug deep in souls of supposing.

Love came down, smashing, flashing, splashing water
of laughter on dry desert of duty and
whispered, You are not alone.

Sylvia Johnson Everett

This tapestry uses color and form to depict the dramatic incursion of love into our lives. That love may be realized through the incarnation of the Christ spirit as remembered in Advent, through the fiery descent of the Holy Spirit at Pentecost, or through the extraordinary experience of human love. The original version of this piece was a commissioned gift for Elizabeth Reiter. This version was a gift to the Faculty of Andover Newton Theological School, where it hangs in the Peck Conference Room. 36" x 24"
