JOHN WESLEY WALTERHOUSE

JOHN WESLEY WALTERHOUSE was born 27 Aug. 1867 in Starke Co. IN to PHILIP BENJAMIN WALTERHOUSE and JULIA ANN BLUE TURNBULL THOMAS WALTERHOUSE. He is the last known child of PHILIP WALTERHOUSE.

His mother remarried on 18 Jul 1868 to a James Hendrix. It is not known what happened to PHILIP but no divorce record or death record for PHILIP has been found. The 1870 Census for Marshall Co. IN shows JOHN, age 3, in the household of JULIANN and James Hendrix who died in 1877. On 5 Aug 1878, JULIANN married GEORGE SCHRINER in Marshall Co. IN. JOHN was raised as a stepson by GEORGE and is shown in his household in the 1880 Census of Marshall Co. IN, age 13.

On 18 Apr 1886, in Starke Co. IN, JOHN married ROSA LEE BALDWIN. She was the daughter of WILLIAM and HANNAH CROWE BALDWIN. They had 15 children:

JOHN worked as a carpenter and house builder and did some farming. The 1910 Census for South Bend, St. Joseph Co. IN shows JOHN and ROSA residing at 1238 Queen St. in a mortgaged home. He stated that his father was "French" by birth. At that time Canadians were frequently referred to as "French". Ten of their children were still at home, including EDWARD who was then 23 years of age. The family moved to a small farm near Bremen in Marshall Co. IN sometime after 1910. They lived within walking distance of his son ED and his family.

 JOHN was admitted to Logansport State Hospital, Cass Co. IN. Newspaper accounts of his death state he had been hospitalized for 3 years but the death certificate gives the length of time residing at his place of death (the hospital) as 7 months and 12 days. He died there on 15 Dec 1927. Cause of death is listed as "cerebral hemorrhage, non-traumatic".

 The death certificate contains several errors: His marital status is listed as "Widowed" which was incorrect as Rosa did not die until 1948. His age is listed as "61?" also incorrect based on the ages given by his mother in the 1860 and 1870 census. The 1900 census records JOHN's age as 37 but in 1910 his age is given as 43 reaffirming a birth date of 1867. He is buried in Bremen Cemetery, Bremen, MarshallCounty IN.
