Sarah E. Walterhouse
Sarah E. Walterhouse, the seventh and last known child of Philip Benjamin Walterhouse and Mary Alice Morris, was born in 1846 in Fingal, Elgin, Ontario Canada.
Speculation: Mary Alice died at about the time Sarah was born. Philip then immigrated to OH.
The infant Sarah was adopted by "a family who did not want her to be affiliated with her true relatives"--a quote from a 1969 letter written by Ben S. Jackson, a grandson of Silas Walterhouse, to Allen Potts. He goes on to say "Aunt Sarah Norton lived in Kenton OH and had a son, a chiropractor, Dr. P. C. Norton who had a daughter and lived in Laurel MD. I visited Dr. Norton about 1960 in Laurel MD. Aunt Sarah's daughter married a Cooper and lived in Kenton in the 1920's. Mrs. Cooper had a son Tom Cooper".
Keeping these facts in mind, Sarah Chapman Norton may be Philip's daughter.
Sarah was the adopted daughter of Harvey and Caroline Beals Chapman and was born July 1, 1847. She was a graduate of the Girls Seminary at Springfield [OH] in 1866 and in 1867 she was married to Charles Norton of Springfield, going to Manhattan KS to make their home. They returned to Ohio in 1876 where Sarah lived until her death from cerebral hemorrhage on 13 April 1927 in Kenton OH.
At the time of her death she left three daughters, Misses Minnie and Clara Norton and Mrs. Charles [Ida] Cooper; one son, Dr. Percy C. Norton; two grandchildren, Thomas Cooper and Ruth Virginia Norton; and one sister Mrs. James [Ida] Watt.
Sarah was a life member of the First M.E. Church of Kenton. She had been in ill health for several years.
Sarah is buried in Grove Cemetery in Kenton, Hardin, OH. Grove Cemetery records show burials for Charles Norton 1842-1923, Roger, son of C and S April 11 1888--1Y 3M 11D as well as Minnie 1868-1958 and Clara 1871-1957. Other Nortons and Coopers are buried there as well.
DAR record #44630 identifies Ida Chapman Watt as a daughter of Harvey Chapman and Caroline Beals. DAR record #44631 identifies Miss Lynn Chapman as a daughter of Harvey Chapman and Caroline Beals.
Many thanks to Louise Lahmann for finding this Sarah E. Norton who most probably is the daughter of Philip Benjamin. Louise and I are still working to verify this identification.
