ROSA LEE BALDWIN WALTERHOUSE
ROSA LEE BALDWIN was the daughter of WILLIAM and HANNAH CROWE BALDWIN. She was born on 27 Sep 1867 in Valparaiso, Porter Co. IN. She married JOHN WESLEY WALTERHOUSE on 18 Apr 1886 in Starke Co. IN. JOHN was a carpenter and house builder in the South Bend, IN area. They had 15 children of whom 3 were born on 22 February. 2 died during childhood and 1 was a still born.
About 1919 ROSA and JOHN purchased to a small farm near Bremen in Marshall Co. IN. They had not lived there long when a fire destroyed most of their possessions. In May of 1927 JOHN became abusive and was sent to a pyschatric hospital at Logansport IN. He died there in December of that year.
After JULIA WALTERHOUSE CRAFT died in 1929, her husband VIRGIL and their children went to live with ROSA.
The home was in walking distance from ED and ETHEL (about a 2 1/2 mile walk).
There were cows and chickens and ROSA made her own butter with a wooden churn.
DON can remember picking wild huckleberries and sliding down the hill near the house on a sled in the winter. He ate his first bowl of cornflakes at Grandma's house. He played with HAROLD CRAFT, JULIA and VIRGIL's son.
After ED WALTERHOUSE died in 1946, ROSA went to live with ETHEL. She is remembered as being very outspoken and "bossy" with Ruth, the youngest child still at home. ROSA could not read or write but she could sign her name and counted money well.
ROSA died at home on 2 Apr 1948 having been in ill health for a number of years. She is buried beside JOHN in Bremen Cemetery, Bremen, Marshall, IN.
