Charles H. Walterhouse
Charles H. Walterhouse was the fourth child of Philip Benjamin Walterhouse and his wife Rebecca Mapes. He was born on 06 August 1857 in Blanchard Twp. OH
In the 1860 census for Washington Twp. Paulding Co. OH, Charles, age 3, appears with his parents. Louis Lahmann, descendant of Silas, told me that her family notes say that Charles was about 3 years old when his mother died and 9 years old when Philip died.
In the 1870 census of German Twp. Marshall Co. IN Charles, age 12, born OH is living in the household of Jacob Engle, a 61 year old farmer born in Germany. The household also includes Jacob's wife Mary and two children.
On 29 November 1879 Charles married Sarah Shodat in Whitley Co. IN. Their daughter Minnie was born 22 July 1880. Charles' name appears as "Charles H. Walterhouse" in two places on the certificate but is "Charles A. Waterhouse" in the bottom portion. The family appears in the 1880 census of Jefferson Twp. IN. Charles age is recorded as 22, worker in a sawmill, born OH, father born Canada, mother born OH. Sarah, his wife, age 22, born in Switzerland and cannot read or write.
At some point Charles left IN for KS and married a second time to Elizabeth Ellen Huffman at Stockton, Rooks, KS. They had one daughter Goldie May born 28 April 1890.
City directories for 1940 and 1942 list a Charles H. Walterhouse located at 1215 S. 14th Street in St. Joseph MO.
Charles died in March 1945 in St. Joseph, Buchanan MO.
