A LITTLE LARGER FOR 1999

This year I waited until April 14 to plant seed. I planted "Mississippi Purple Hull Peas" in 16 bags of composted pine bark. There are 3 or 4 plants in each end of the bags. I planted squash and Blue lake pole beans. I then set out 26 tomato plants. There are 24 "Betterboys", one "Goliath Bush" and a "Sweet Cluster". Click below to see the garden on June 1st.The only change I made from last year was getting rid of the "emitters" that I used to drip nutrients by each plant. These things stop up often and the plants suffer until you clean them. I pulled all of them out and installed 1/2 in. PVC and drilled a small hole at each plant. The hole must be the right size to have an equal flow rate along the pipe. I used a 3/64 hole that gives me about 10oz. per minute. I had only 3 holes to stop up all summer.

I am still feeding the garden "Total-Grow" (3-13-29) from Winsboro, Louisiana. There are two separate fields. One for the tomatoes and another for the peas, beans, squash and peppers. Click below to see 30 days of growth.

Here are some pictures of my garden and a friends garden who decided to try growing things this way. It sure is fun and the vegetables are delicious.

We have had a HOT dry summer but my Better Boy tomatoes have been very productive. I wish I had kept up with how many pounds of tomatoes these plants have produced. This will be something I will do next year. They are now 10ft. tall and still producing at a very fast rate. They are using 120 gallons of nutrients every 2 1/2 days. I contribute my success this year to keeping the PH of the nutrients at the proper level. Tomatoes like a PH between 5.6 and 5.8. I use muriatic acid to do this.
