Theory:
Conrad Hockersmith, Jr. [son of Konrad Hackenschmidt] is the same man as Edward
Hockersmith of Jessamine Co., KY, who died in 1808.
We have no single
document which states the fact that Conrad, Jr. and Edward [d. 1808] are the
same man, but we do have a document which all but says it [Jessamine Co., KY
Circuit Court case #32].
Jessamine Co., KY
Circuit Court case #32 - shows indebtedness of Jacob and Henry Hockersmith to
Edward Hockersmith. This original loan was made in Frederick Co., MD on 25 April,
1789. This is just 5 days after Conrad Jr. sold part of "Family
Study" to his brother Jacob. Could this be the money that sealed the deal?
The really extraordinary fact here is that on 26 Sep 1796 Edward's right and
title to this money was signed away to Samuel Scott by Conrad
Hockersmith. Who was this Conrad? To my knowledge, there were only two men
alive in Kentucky in 1796 who were named Conrad. The first was, of course,
Conrad Jr., son of Konrad. The other was Conrad Rice Hockersmith [my 3G grandfather]
who was born 22 Nov 1779. He was the son of this Edward and would have been
just 17 years old in 1796. Why would Conrad Rice sign his father's document
when we know his father was still alive? I believe this rules out Conrad Rice.
This all leads to one conclusion - that this Conrad was in fact Conrad Jr. and
that he and Edward are the same man.
2. The wife of
Conrad Jr. was named Eve [or Eva]. We know that Edward's wife was Eva Rice, dau
of Casper Rice. This is substantiated by the "Neet" reference supplied
by Peg Kwadrat.
3. The close
association between Edward and Michael. No way it is father/son. I conclude
that brothers is the obvious conclusion.
4. Death date of
Edward/Conrad Jr. being 1808 fits nicely with his being a brother of George
[died 1799]. Michael [died circa 1812], and Jacob [died 1818]. In other words,
it is not out of the realm of possibility. Edward's will - Jessamine Co., KY,
page 241, dated 13 Oct, 1808, date of probate Nov. 1808.
