Pirate's Pension at Bluebeard's Castle
St.
Thomas, U.S. Virgin Islands
In June of 1997, we (W. Clinton Terry and Pat Voss) bought a timeshare unit in
the yet unfinished Pirate's Pension. These units sit at the foot of the
Bluebeard property, built into the hill on which it stands (see top photo), and
overlooks St. Thomas Harbor into which cruise ships come and go on a regular
basis (see picture below). From the balcony of our unit, you can see these ships coming and
going, as well as seeing them parked along the wharf as they load and unload
passengers who hurry into the town of Charlotte Amalie. Each
time we have had the opportunity to visit St. Thomas we have had a wonderful
time exploring the town and surrounding areas, making day trips to St. Johns and
to a number of the British Virgin Islands.

Bluebeard's Castle and Beach Resorts include Bluebeard's Castle Hotel, Bluebeard's Castle Beach Club and Villas, and the Elysian Beach Resort. Blue Beard's Castle itself is located on a hilltop overlooking the harbor (see photos above) and the town of Charlotte Amalie. Its signature red rooftops are among the first sights for arriving cruise passengers. At the center of the Castle is a stone tower that legend has it that once served as a lookout for the pirate Bluebeard. It is believed that Bluebeard built this castle for his love, Mercedita. When he found out she had cheated on him, he killed her and never returned. Actually, the "castle" was a watch tower that assisted the Fort Christian fortress built by the Danish in the 1670s. Fort Christian is one of the oldest buildings on St. Thomas. Checking at the hotel takes place in the former residence of the Danish governor of the island.
With 170 rooms, Bluebeards Castle has operated as a hotel since 1933. The modern tropical units with rattan furniture, ceramic tile floors, ceiling fans and air-conditioning rent out when the timeshare owners are not on-island. The rooms have refrigerators, cable television, terraces and spectacular views. The suites come with fully-equipped kitchens. There are two tennis courts, one whirlpool, a fitness center, water sports lessons, and three restaurants and a piano bar with nightly entertainment to keep you busy.
Bluebeard's Castle Beach Club (The Old Limetree) is located
in a secluded setting on Limetree Beach approximately 6 miles from the airport.
It has 74 air conditioned rooms with 2 double beds or 1 king, cable color TV,
bathroom, and in-room safe.
The Elysian Beach Resort is located on Cowpet Bay, home of
the St. Thomas Yacht Club, about one mile from Redhook at the eastern end of the
island and about 9 miles from Charlotte Amalie. It has 175 air conditioned
rooms with double or king beds, phone, cable color TV, ceiling fan, and a
private terrace.
