These notes are summaries of information obtained in almost
two decades of research on the Dukes family of Orangeburg County, South
Carolina. Establishing connections and interpreting information has required
information on other Duke and Dukes families in the lowcountry. (The terminal
ÒsÓ, as in Dukes, comes and goes in all the Duke families of the southeastern
United States; it was absent when the Orangeburg family first appeared, but was
acquired after a few years.)
