NEW YORK, December 5, 2000:
Global Music Network (www.gmn.com), the leading internet destination for jazz, opera, classical music and the live arts, today announced the winner of the first annual GMN Women in Jazz Composer contest. Marlene Tachoir (pronounced Tash-wah), won for her original composition "FLYER", which was the unanimous choice of the judges, including David Atherton, President of GMN; soprano saxophonist and GMN Family Artist David Liebman; Steven Long, GMN Vibe President of Operations, and Bret Primack, GMN Jazz Editor. "FLYER" was recorded by the Group Tachoir, a quartet led by Marlene's husband, vibraphonist Jerry Tachoir that includes Marlene on piano, Rusty Holloway on bass, and drummer Chester Thompson that will be part of a future Tachoir Swing Project.
Ms. Tachoir has been an active composer for more than 20 years. As part of a large musical family in the Saguenay region of the Quebec province, her bandleader father exposed her to jazz and improvisation at an early age. After attending the Quebec Conservatory, she pursued her interest in jazz and composition by attending the prestigious Berklee College of Music in Boston, where she met her husband, Jerry . Since then, her music has been featured on six recordings, aired on NPR and jazz radios everywhere in addition to public television, CBC, and CBS performances. Ms. Tachoir wrote a book entitled, "SOLO VIBRAPHONE COLLECTION" published by Riohcat Music, and her method book "CREATIVE STUDIES FOR KEYBOARD VOICINGS" will be coming out soon.
Marlene's compositional skills are not limited to small ensemble; she has recently finished a three movement Vibraphone Concerto for Orchestra to be premiered soon. Other compositions have featured the Group Tachoir with string quartet. She is also currently working on her first solo piano project featuring some soothing and inspirational compositions.
