Artist's Statement
I'll focus on the simplicity of my work, yet jump right into it's origins. I seem attracted to solid fields of color. I also enjoy the imperfections that the rough surface gives me, forces me to make mistakes. But why ancient art as a foundation, why Central/South American culture? Perhaps the colors and shapes appeal to me on an infantile, subconscious level. I may be remembering a book, toy, picture, etc... from my earliest visual development. As for the shape, I find the circle very relaxing. There isn't a start or stop to the disc; they just visually flow forever. Rectangular art seems less... timeless, more of a single punch. I also cannot escape the conscious choice to make "sellable" art. I chose to focus to a small point of interest and work within that limitation. I dream of being Duchamp-like in variety or works, but does that multi-interest art have a place in the art market anymore? Perhaps Atlanta is still a "art as an accessory to a couch" kind or town. Still...I plan on adding Cubism, Futurism, Complex mathematics and more to later works.
Like my painting the purpose or meaning of my work is a thick tapestry or interwoven layers. The foundation of my disc as of all my work is the concept of "Creator Anachronism", the attempt to learn about GOD by imitating it/him/her through my own universal models. The second layer is the bridge between the small focused instinctual consciousness and the epic expanse of the subconscious mind. Somewhere in the ether between the two is the transitional point of self-awareness in our mental evolution. I explore this area, tracing the steps from animal to human in order to recreate the experience of evolution in each painting. You might say the paintings are the by-product of these transitional adventures. Third is the acknowledgment of the rhythmic foundations or all matter, the primal timeclock, or mathematical language of the universe. To understand and embrace this is to join in the rhythm, to sing the song of existence. I feel being alive is being a gear in the incomprehensibly complex pocketwatch that is everything.
