Building the mansion

The 25 words or less mission statement for this site goes like this: "An accessible and intuitive introduction to abstract mathematics with a minimum of jargon, covering fundamental ideas in group theory, proof, set theory, functions, topology, number theory, and combinatorics, intended for non-mathematicians." (Before you start, yes, I know that's more than 25 words.)

Have I succeeded? I'll never know unless you tell me. If I didn't want to hear from you, I wouldn't have an e-mail link on the bottom of every page.

The idea for the mansion began with a program given at a local university designed to motivate middle schoolers to study science and mathematics. I knew right away that I wanted to participate. Mathematics is my passion, and here was a chance to share my joy with some folks who maybe were not too old to have fun. Anyway, as I thought about my presentation, I realized that, based on my experience, it's not until third year of college that a student encounters mathematics that's less than 200 years old, and only the math majors would be taking those classes.

I think that's a lousy arrangement, and this is my little contribution to improving it. Maybe this can be like a small wedge, adding a new crack in the wall that keeps modern mathematics a mystery to most people.

About Spud

I'm a graduate student at Georgia State University, pursuing a Master of Science degree in Mathematics. I really love this stuff. I have been studying mathematics for a long time, and I am keenly interested in how we teach mathematics. If you really want to know more, then send me an e-mail. I answer my mail.

This site was edited with Download SiteAid!, which I have found to be an excellent HTML editor. If you've looked at the freeware sites, you know that there are a zillion free HTML editors out there, and most of them work well and get the job done. This is one of the friendliest I've found. It's very easy to use, and has more bells and whistles than I'll ever need. When I had a question, and wrote to their support desk, a real human being actually read my question, responded promptly, and answered my question. I give them this plug without reservation. The latest version is shareware, but look for the freeware link at their site, and you can still get the final free version.

Freeware PlusIf you've looked around, you know that there are dozens of good sources for freeware out there. Most are good, a few are great. This is one of the great ones. They don't rate their listings - they just won't list something that they don't think is tops. Spud highly recommends you pay them a visit.
