Old News - October 2004

His Side October 30, 2004 - Tonight is trick-or-treat night in our little town. We had some interesting little visitors. One little girl, after Stacey opened the door, walked right past her into our living room. Maybe she smelled the hamburgers I was making or something. A little boy asked for a glass of water and then gave me his bubblegum so he could drink the water. Thanks kid, I'm all misty eyed. I finally got around to setting up the A/V system in the living room. Hooray! No more having to turn on the subtitles when we're watching DVD's. Speaking of DVD's, Stacey got season four of "Angel" for her birthday, and my wonderful wife bought me the new Star Wars DVD boxed set the day it came out. Hoo boy that's a lot of DVD goodness. October 4, 2004 - Wow, my posting frequency has slowed to a Veronica-like crawl. So what's new? Sister-in-law Jennifer married Frank on Saturday. The wedding and reception were at Magnolia Plantation down in Harahan. The highlight of the reception, for me at least, was Donna and Miss Linda (Frank's mom) dancing around the reception to "Mother In Law". There are pictures to come, but probably not until we move the website to our new ISP (Bellsouth). It was also very cool to hang out with more of Stacey's family. I got to meet Supergramps (up up and away!) who told me I look like Peter Ustinov. I sure hope he didn't mean the way Peter Ustinov looks today. Okay, that's it. I'm sick and don't feel like writing about daily banalities. Go on, git. Don't come back unless you've got some chicken noodle soup.

Her Side 10/18/04 - I love the South. The specific thing I love about the South that inspires this post is the weather. It's been cloudy all morning, and The Weather Channel's website says isolated thunderstorms - they ain't lyin'. I look outside, it's cloudy and grey. I look at my computer, then nary a minute later, my Dish skips a beat and I look back outside and it is POURING. The street had already started to flood, and it hasn't been raining for 3 minutes, that's how hard it was raining. I tell Drew via instant message that it's raining, I went to change the laundry, come back, and the rain had stopped, as fast as it had begun. There was no warning that it was going to start, nor that it was about to finish. The sky looked like this:
Amazing, huh? The west side of the sky is blue and beautiful, the east side is dark and scary. I love the South.
10/13/04 - Happy birthday Cousin James! Even though I haven't talked to you in like three years and you don't know anything about this website, I hope your birthday's wunnerful.
So yesterday, I was following a Ford Probe. My husband calls them "secretary cars," in the same class as, say, Mitsubishi Eclipses and Honda Civics. They're cute, they're fast, and secretaries like them. They're not normally all that fast, but you sure can trick them out. I saw one yesterday that was pretty beat up and silly looking - but silliest was the bumper sticker: "Bad-a** girls drive bad-a** toys." That just struck me crazy funny. I thought to myself, surely you jest. Bad-a** toy? A PROBE? Come on. My second thought was - do you take this car to your grandma's house?
By the way, sometimes I hate America. Or Americans. I can never tell who's worse - the dingalings who bring these suits, or the dingalings who allow these suits.
10/12/04 - I just found one MAJOR benefit to living in Mississippi. Government officials... wait for it... are you sitting down?... pick up the phone!!! What?! That's just crazy! For the past 4 years, I've had to go through at least 6 menus and a 20 minute hold time. I LOVE Mississippi!
Okay, so back when I got my driver's license, I marked "yes" on the application where it asked if I wanted to register to vote. It's been about a month and a half, and I've gotten no solicitations from greedy politicians for their votes, no voter information, no instructions, nothing, and the election is 3 weeks away. I looked online to try to register to vote on Mississippi's web site, and it said I'd have to register 30 days before the election. Oy. So I called the county clerk for my county to ask if I was registered, but they said no. I called the Department of Public Safety (Mississippi doesn't have a DMV) to ask them what happened to my voter registration. Well, they're gonna call me back. I sure hope I can vote. There are two major things I want to vote for on November 2nd - president and making my county a "wet county." How can you make tequila-lime chicken without tequila?!
Also, on my street, there's this completely out of place stop sign. Here's a horrible, yet mostly accurate illustration:
As you can see, the bizarro stop sign (which is not actually shaped like that) is completely useless. By the way, the stop sign faces towards the house above it. I live in a cute little subdivision and the street doesn't go much further than the house above the stop sign, which means nobody's going fast enough to approach that curve to spin out or something. Not to mention, you can see the curve from far away because that stop sign is at the corner of a pretty big lot. The only people that stop sign might benefit are the people who cross me and my neighbor that live on the curve, because we have to cross "traffic" to get into our driveway. (By the way, in the nearly 2 months I've lived here, I think I've had to wait for one car to pass before I could get into my driveway.) However, it's not as if we're hauling booty to get into our driveways, we obviously have to make sure nobody's coming first - the stop sign's not going to help that. It's nothing but a nuisance.
So I called City Hall to ask for the stop sign to come down. I didn't get a yes or a no, but I did get to talk to someone. Cross your fingers. I watch people blow through that stupid sign (myself included) every day.
Now, in California, I'd still be on the phone with those offices. In Miss'ippi, those two calls took me less than 10 minutes. How fantastic!
*Update* - The people from the Department of Public Safety called to talk to the County Clerk (on my behalf! can you believe it?) and they just today got my registration in the mail. Since it's dated 8-31, I'll be able to vote! YAY! Wet county, here we come! |
