Some Thoughts Upon
Child Blessings, Quickenings, or Sainings
|
Quickening refers to making alive or vitalizing. Saining means to sanctify or
bless so as to protect from evil influence.
A Child Blessing centers around the child. It's about giving the child a name, offering it protection, dedicating it to the Goddess, and/or welcoming it into a community. The more personal you make such a blessing, the more meaningful, and powerful, it will be. It is important to consider what you include from your own tradition. This ritual might include just the child, a parent and a priestess, or it might involve many more players and a far larger community. There may be stories to be shared, legends to be outlined, well-wishes made, prophesies spoken, an anointing with oil, water, herbs, and gifts. A particular Goddess, and maybe a God, might be invoked. The child is brought forward by a parent or parents. There may be guardians to be named, to help the child along the way in life. There is a presentation of the child to the Goddess, the community, or both. All this is done within a magickal circle that is cast. There is the calling of particular energies from the quarters appropriate for the event and the traditions involved.
