We purchased our 1979 Argosy Minuet 7.3 meter travel trailer on October 17, 2003
from a gentleman in Jonesboro, Arkansas. He had advertised it for sale along with a couple of other
Airstreams on the Vintage Airstream website. We drove over
1200 miles round trip from our home in Alabama to purchase it.
The Argosy is in excellent condition as you can see from the photos. The interior is mostly original,
except for new curtains in the front and a new refrigerator.
My wife Mona and I have two children, Caroline and Logan. We were able to camp in the Argosy twice before noticing a small
leak from around the black tank. I found that the tank was cracked and when removing it the tank crumbled from age. A new tank
was ordered and installed in September 2004 and our first trip with the "pig" was Disney World and Fort Wilderness.
Argosys were made by the Airstream Travel Trailer Company in a factory in Versailles, Ohio. Their production
started in 1972 and ended in 1979. Production of the Argosy restarted in 1986, but these had an exterior of fiberglass
instead of the familiar riveted aluminum. The introduction of the Argosy provided a platform for Airstream to
test market new ideas before mass-producing them in the higher-end Airstream models. The first Airstream motorhomes
bore the Argosy name. Argosys are also rumored to have been sometimes made of blemished aluminum that would have
stood out sorely on the bare aluminum Airstream, but worked fine on the painted Argosys.
This is our family's second Airstream. We purchased a 1963 Airstream Tradewind in 1995 from Faires in Charlotte, NC.
Faires was formerly a bona fide Airstream dealer, but fell on hard times and at the time of our purchase they only sold
a few used models. B.W. Faires and his brother Frank and the other employees were a joy to meet. The business closed a couple
of years after we made this purchase. We sold the Airstream in September 2002.
