SouthernMoon Farm       Weimaraners

Frequently Asked Questions

Q:  Do you have any blue eyed puppies?

A: All Weimaraner pups are born with blue eyes that typically turn to various shades of amber by the time they are 6 months old.  We feel that breeders that advertise "blue eyes" are doing a disservice to the breed by hooking in people just looking for something unique and not really researching the breed.

Q:  Do you ship?

A: We do ship, although we prefer the family to pick the puppy up.  We also have other suggestions on shipping puppies, other than with the airlines.  Contact us for more information on this.

Q: Why do breeders ask so many questions about me or have me fill out a form when I want to buy a puppy?
Shouldn't I be the one asking the questions?

A:  Yes! You should ask as many questions as you can.  A breeder that asks questions or has a prospective family complete an "interview" form show that they are not out to just sell a puppy, but that they (the breeder) genuinely cares about the puppies they breed and wants to place their pups in homes that will suit them.

Q:  Do you think a Weim is the right dog for me?

A:  Here are a few links to help you decide.

Q:  When will the pups be ready?

A: We prefer to keep our puppies until they are 7  weeks old.

Q:  Are the puppies eating solid food?

A: We introduce quality puppy food to our pups at 3 weeks of age.  At 6 weeks, they are eating only puppy food.

Q: Are your puppies silver?

A:  Yes.  Pictures can be deceiving in regards to color.  The background color and lighting affects the subject greatly.  There are, however, many variations of silver/gray.

Q:  Why are your deposits non-refundable?

A: Getting a puppy is a big decision.  When you pay the deposit, you are saying that you are ready for this major  life-changing decision.  I hope that by having a non-refundable deposit, it may save puppies from ending up in shelters/rescue organizations.

Q: What are the two most  important things to do when getting a Weimaraner?

A: Before: research; After: train

Q: Do you recommend crate training?

A: Yes!  Learn why and how here.

Q: I read that some breeders say to beware of breeders that breed blue puppies. Is that true?

A:  Blue Weimaraners cannot be shown in the AKC show ring; However, they can still excel in the field, the agility course, and of course can still lay at your feet at night (Ahh, who's kidding? Sleep on your bed at night).  The blue color of the Weimaraner is a personal preference.

Q: Can you recommend some books for us to read?

A:  Read any and all you can get your hands on.  I am developing a reading list and will post it here when I am finished.
