The Gagarin Kitchen

About the men in his family Gagarin wrote, "I remember the men of my family as men of substance. They were educated in the school of life and could sit silently at the kitchen table with their glasses of chai and the samovar. That was enough. They had little use for financiers. Their strength was in their action: quick, decisive, courageous, final. Revolutionaries - to the end.

Chair from the Interior of a Captain's Cabin

A. Rodchenko, 1928.

"Whenever anyone would come over Gagarin would always be sure to mention that his chair was from the interior of a ship captain's cabin and was designed by Alexander Rodchenko. Only Gagarin and Lenochka (our first daughter) were allowed to sit in the chair and then only when she was well behaved. It was their private little joke.(Valentina Gagarin, Road to the Stars)

"Gagarin always liked to eat with the table set with his Fifth Anniversary Red Army plates, not just on special occassions but every day. It was an expensive set and it made me nervous. Trotsky had been inscribed on the plates and they were fine bone china but Gagarin didn't care. Pragmatic. Revolutionary to the end. (Valentina Gagarin, Road to the Stars)
