Jr. Firefighters

The Number 7 Township Volunteer Fire Department is starting a new program for Junior Firefighters January 2005. This will be open to any person of good character between the ages of 15 and 18 living within the Number 7 Township V.F.D. fire district.

With this program, Junior Firefighter will be learning basic firefighting through advanced firefighting knowledge, basic first aid and CPR, rescue operations while building leadership skills and self-esteem, and learning individual responsibilities.

After being accepted into the Junior Firefighter Program, they may be issued turnout gear and a pager. Junior Firefighters will attend Tuesday night trainings and meetings with Number 7 Firefighters. They will learn the policies and procedures of the department and basic firefighting skills before the Chief and Training Officers will allow them to respond to different types of calls. Once approved to respond, Junior Firefighters will not be allowed to enter hazardous environments such as a structure fire, directing traffic or any other situation deemed so by the department.

Junior Firefighters who have only a learners permit will need to be brought to the fire department on Tuesdays at 7:00pm and to each call, also, they will need to be picked up by 9:30pm, If a Junior Firefighter has his or her driver license, they will be allowed to drive to the fire department or to calls with parents permission. They will also obey all traffic laws and drive in a safe manner. At no time will a Junior Firefighter leave school to attend any fire department activities or calls.

As time goes by, we hope to have made a positive influence on the Junior Firefighters. When they are at the age of 18 they can apply for full-membership in the fire department. Once a full-time member they will be eligible to join the North Carolina State Pension Fund which the fire department pays for each member. After serving 20 years and at the age of 55 they will start receiving a monthly pension check.

For anyone interested, please call the Fire Department. We look forward to working with you and your child.
