Fire Bomb Damages
Hippie District Saloon
The
second fire bombing of a business in the Peachtree-10th Street "hippie
district of Atlanta in less than three weeks was reported early Tuesday.
Battalion
Fire Chief Frank Cooper said someone broke out a window on the north side of a
saloon at 929 Peachtree St., with a brick and then attempted to hurl a burning container of
flammable liquid inside.
"There
was a strong odor of gasoline at the scene. Some of the burning liquid spattered
inside causing minor damage to the interior. The timely passing of a policeman, who noticed flames in a
driveway or alley beside the building, possibly prevented more serious damage
to the business there," Chief Cooper said.
EARLIER
THIS month, a fire- bomb was hurled into Atlantis Rising, a
group
of co-operative shops operated by hippies at 1017 Peachtree St. That arson
suspected fire is still under investigation.
In the
latest incident, Police Lt. Marvin Moon was patrolling in the section when he observed
flames in the driveway beside the Stein Club, beer tavern.
"Firemen
were able to quell the flames inside the business with a booster hose," he
said.
According
to Chief Cooper, a witness saw at least two youths or young men run out of the
alley shortly before the fire was discovered
