Déjàvu
Déjàvu: The illusion of having already experienced something actually being
experienced for the first time.
I have a theory on dreams and their meanings that I have cultivated over many
years of my own dream analysis. You see, I believe that if you can remember your
dreams and analyze them, then you will see they are made up of bits of your past, present
and future. You may recognize some bits, such as dreaming about an old friend of
yours because you heard their name mentioned yesterday, or dreaming about a plane crash
because you saw it on the news just before you went to bed. Then other parts of your
dreams you may recognize from your past, such as the house you grew up in, or your school,
or maybe something you used to own (something familiar like your first car, or a favorite
shirt). It's this last part that is so interesting to me. I think in your
subconscious state of sleep, that your mind has access to instances in your future.
Brief flashes of places, people, events that are insignificant right now, because you
don't recognize them yet. If you analyze your dreams now, those parts might not make
sense yet because they are not familiar. For instance, you may dream of sitting in a
strange office that you don't recognize and someone is talking about putting clothes on a
dog. Right now, this probably makes no sense whatsoever. But 2 years from now,
when you are sitting there in your new job and your co-worker is talking about her
grandchild playing dress-up with Fido...*whoa* you have a "Dejavu!"
You may have forgotten that dream long ago, but suddenly, you have a weird sense of this
all seeming so familiar, like you've done it before.
Many people have different ideas about dreams and what they mean. This is one of
my favorite topics of discussion . There are so many interesting views and
experiences that I learn about when I start talking to others about their dreams.
Some have told me they never dream in color, others have told me they never dream at all.
(I think they might remember their dreams if they experiment with waking at
different times.) I would love to hear your thoughts if you'd like to share them
with me.
