Duckie and Xylo have a new baby!

Sugar Gliders are marsupials, which means the mother has a pouch on her belly, like a kangaroo.    I have read that the "joey" is about one month old when it is "born" and then makes its journey to the pouch.  At that time, the joey is about the size of a grain of rice.  It crawls up the mother's body all by itself  and wiggles into the pouch where it will stay for another two months.  Inside the pouch it will nurse on its mother's milk and grow and develop.  After about a month in the pouch, it will be visible as sort of a peanut shaped lump under the soft skin of the mother's belly.

Pregnant females may carry one or two babies.

Duckie carried her baby on her left side.

I first noticed Duckie was pregnant in march, on my birthday .

You can just barely see a small lump on the lower left side of her abdomen.

The lump is much bigger now...

Duckie was hanging on the side of the cage and I noticed the pouch was open wide and the baby seemed to be moving around inside.

I snapped a couple of quick pictures.

When I came home from work that afternoon, I saw the most precious little baby resting on Duckie's tummy.
