Ottis was one of the founders of the Saffold Family Society, and had served as its
treasurer. He was historian/archivist at the time of his death. He was working on the
Saffold Family Book, and attended the May meeting of the society. He also was a founding
member of the Clopton Family Genealogical Society and Clopton Family Archives and served
on the Editorial Advisory Board.
He was a descendant of Dr. Seaborn Jones Saffold Sr. of Morgan County, Georgia, and of
Dr. Alford Clopton of Putnam County, Georgia. He co-authored the essay, "A
Tempest In A Briar Patch," regarding his ancestors, Marianne (Clopton) Reid of
Eatonton and her daughter, Sarah Elizabeth (Reid) Saffold of Eatonton and Morgan
County. The essay may be seen at http://homepages.rootsweb.com/~clopton/briar.htm.
He was also a member of the Clopton Family Association and served as the Military Affairs
Advisor for the CFA's webpage, and a member of the Sons of the Confederacy.
He was proud of his Southern heritage and added immensely to our knowledge of the Clopton,
Reid, Guinn, and Saffold families. He will be greatly missed by his family and by his
many friends throughout the country.
