DeKalb County
Courthouses 1823-1967

The first courthouse in DeKalb County was constructed on the northwest corner of the present court square in 1823. It was a log structure built over a dungeon-like basement which was used for the county jail.

It was replaced in 1829 by a brick courthouse which burned in 1842, destroying virtually all of the county's records. Construction was completed in 1847 on the third courthouse, which was the first to be located in the center of the square. This courthouse was demolished in 1898 and replaced by a granite building with
an
imposing cupola on top.

Fire gutted all but the granite exterior of this building in 1916. The fifth courthouse was built on the granite foundation of the fourth, but with the addition of east and west wings and minus the cupola.

County government business moved to a new courthouse in 1967. Public portions of the Old Courthouse have since been restored and are available for rental for parties and other functions. The old courtroom on the second floor, with its grand windows overlooking the Decatur town square, is an especially popular venue for weddings. The Old Courthouse served as headquarters for the Irish Delegation during the 1996 Olympics.

DeKalb County's "Old Courthouse" was built of local granite in 1898. The interior of the building and the distinctive cupola
burned in 1916, leaving only the granite walls standing. The structure was rebuilt and served as the seat of county
government until the mid 1960s. The building now houses the DeKalb Historical Society.
