A woman of great love, generosity and compassion for her fellow man, she generally found time in a amazingly busy day to do kind deeds for those in special need. Her weekly   postcards to those she felt needed caring attention were directed to numerous people especially the lonely elderly. Her love for animals, especially dogs and horses, was known by many.

A stray dog showing up at her home in Apalachee received its own food dish twice daily and was given necessary immunization, baths and constant love. There were five such dogs on hand at the time of her death.

An avid gardener, Mrs. Shockley enjoyed trying newly developed plants and shrubs and delighted in those with ancient backgrounds.

She enjoyed antique furniture and rugs, and acquired a significant body of knowledge on both.

Surviving children are Mrs. David T. Smith of St. Simons Island, Mrs. John Hattaway Shockley of Apalachee, Mr. Peter Shockley of Alexandria, Va., and Mr. Joseph Truman Shockley of Marietta. Step children surviving are Mrs. Robert I. Kemp of Marietta, Mr. Hugh H. Shockley of Buford, Mr. Leonard H. Shockley of Atlanta, Mrs. Victor B. Riden of Athens and Mr. Walter Ray Shsockley of Winterville. The pallbearers will be her sons and stepsons.

The family requests memorials to Mrs. Shockley be sent to the Apalachee United Methodist Church. Services were held Tuesday, Oct. 24, 2000 with interment at Madison City Cemetery.
