Welcome to Mr. Nichol's Class!![]() Dear Parents: Welcome to Project CHILD Mathematics! Here is some information which will help you understand what your child does in this classroom. The goal in Project CHILD Mathematics is to develop a firm foundation in mathematics to meet the needs of a rapidly changing society. This means not only being competent in computational skills, but also in understanding mathematical concepts in order to solve problems. In addition to textbooks, your child will be using calculators, computers, and hands-on materials. Computers are an integral part of instruction. The game-like aspects of many computer programs increase students' motivation. The instant feedback helps them quickly correct any errors. And the problem-solving aspects challenge them to think. Hands-on objects such as puzzles and blocks help children understand mathematical concepts by seeing and touching. The sequence of instruction may not follow the exact sequence in the textbook. The CHILD framework is arranged to provide variety for students, and extended emphasis on problem solving. Be assured, however, that all major concepts and skills required by our school district and state will be covered over the course of the year. You can help your child be a good mathematics student in many ways, especially by relating mathematics to everyday life experiences. For example, cooking, gardening, shopping, carpentry, sewing, and sports use mathematics extensively. You can also assist your child in mastering the fundamentals (such as basic addition and multiplication facts) by providing a quiet place and setting specific times for practice. I'll be letting you know the deadlines we will be setting for these skill topics, so you can monitor your child's progress in these areas. I'm looking forward to working with your child. Please let me know if you have any suggestions or specific concerns. I'm looking forward to a busy and exciting year. Sincerely, Mr. Nichol CHILD Mathematics Teacher If you need to contact Mr. Nichol, you can call (352) 671-6325 or e-mail nicholg@marion.k12.fl.us and I will get back to you as soon as possible.
