Welcome to Our Project Child Cluster!

Cluster Teachers Image

Dear Parents:

We would like to introduce ourselves to you. We are the Project CHILD teaching team that will be working with your child during the primary grades (K-2) or intermediate grades (3-5). Each of us has chosen a subject specialty and we have been trained to integrate current educational methods supported by research in our field. We will be using many strategies and learning tools (computers, books, hands-on activities) to develop your child’s competence in reading, writing, and mathematics.

Project CHILD is designed to meet the changing needs of children, our future citizens who will enter the workplace in the 21st century. Thus you will notice differences from the way school was for us. Some of these differences are that Project CHILD students work cooperatively with partners at computers, move around the classroom to learning stations, use games and puzzles in addition to textbooks, and work at tables (and even on the floor) as well as at desks.

Beneath the movement and activity in a Project CHILD classroom there is a great deal of structure. We will be planning instruction using an enhanced curriculum resource book called a Planning Guide. Your child will be working through six units of instruction, which not only include the basic skills required by our school district, but offer enhanced objectives such as word processing, keyboarding, problem solving and critical thinking. Underlying this whole process is the goal of developing responsible, independent learners.

Your child will use a special record book called a Passport. This Passport is a means for your child to set goals, record Passport activities, register opinions and make responsible choices. At the end of each unit, your child will bring the Passport home. Be sure to review the Passport with your child. You will be able to assess the effort your child is putting forth by the number of station activities your child has recorded.

The Passport is different from a report card or class work. Don’t expect perfect spelling or handwriting. We’re more concerned with the content than the form, since the Passport is like a personal diary. (We’ll be stressing proper writing in class work.) There is a page for you to make comments for us. Please sign and return the Passport so that we know you have discussed it with your child.

Sincerely, The Project CHILD Team
