Description of class officer positions

The office of President is an elected position for a term of four weeks. The President may be reelected only once, therefore can serve a maximum of eight weeks. The President must choose the person he/she would like as his/her Vice President before the election takes place. The President and Vice President are then elected as a team.

The office of Vice President is an elected position for a term of four weeks. As with the President, the Vice President may be reelected only once.

The office of Parliamentarian is an elected position for a term of four weeks. The Parliamentarian may be reelected an unlimited number of times.

The office of Secretary is appointed by the President and can be for the full term of the President's office or replaced as deemed necessary by the President.

The office of Classroom Assistant is appointed by the Senior Judge and can be for a term of up to four weeks or replaced as deemed necessary by the Senior Judge.

The office of Historian is an elected position for a term of four weeks. The Historian can be reelected an unlimited number of times.

The office of Editor-in-Chief is an elected position for a term of four weeks. The Editor-in-Chief can be reelected an unlimited number of times.

The office of Copy Editor is an elected position for a term of four weeks. The Copy Editor can be reelected an unlimited number of times.

The position of Line Leader is appointed by the Vice President for a term of one week. No person can serve as Line Leader more than one time in any four-week term.

The position of Door Holder is appointed by the Line Leader for a term of one day. No person can serve as Door Holder for more than two days in any week.

The office of Judge is an elected position for a term of four weeks. Any Judge may be reelected only once. At all times there must be two boys and two girls serving as Judges.

The position of Peer Mediator is appointed by the Judges (the girl Judges appoint the girl Mediator and the boy Judges appoint the boy Mediator) for a term of two weeks. No person can serve as Peer Mediator for two consecutive terms.

The office of Senior Judge is filled by the teacher. This office is for the term of the entire school year. In the event of the absence of the Senior Judge the office will be filled by the substitute teacher.

Bylaws

Any officer may be removed from their position through the impeachment process wherein everyone in the class votes on the issue. A two-thirds majority vote is needed to remove an officer from his/her position. (A Judicial Review must first be held to determine if disciplinary action is necessary. The impeachment process can then be continued regardless of the findings of the Judicial Review to determine if the officer should be relieved of his/her duties.)

Any officer can be removed from their position by means of Judicial Review wherein a complaint is lodged against the officer and the offense is determined severe by a majority vote of the Judges.

In the event that a Judge is the accused in a Judicial Review, the President will fill that Judge's vacant position for this review. (If the President is of a different gender than the accused Judge, the President will appoint an appropriate replacement Judge for this review.)

All officers are expected to conduct their duties in a professional manner and set an example of exemplary behavior for thier classmates.

Any individual who has been convicted of an offense determined to be severe by Judicial Review will not be eligible to be elected to any office for a period of eight weeks.

With the exception of the first election, which is held during the first week of school, the office of President must be filled by an individual who has previously served as an officer in another elected position. Serving in an appointed position does NOT meet this qualification!

Judicial Review Process

Any student may be referred to a Judicial Review by the Peer Mediators if the Mediators are unable to satisfactorily resolve the problem or issue between the students. Also, any officer will automatically be referred to a Judicial Review if they are accused of disrespectful or inappropriate behavior.

The Judicial Review Process is conducted during the student government meeting and is heard before the Judges and the members of the class. The Judges will then decide on an appropriate disciplinary measure based on the offending action and the information presented from both parties involved.

Punishments that may be recommended by the Judicial Review process are as follows:

  • Written warning
  • Written warning and assigned to eat lunch in isolation
  • Written warning and telephone call home
  • Removal from elected or appointed office, if applicable
  • Parent-Teacher conference
  • Referral to Dean of Discipline

The decision of punishment will vary depending on the number and severity of previous incidents and the severity of the current incident. This process will help develop a sense of community and individual responsibility to the community.

Academic Probation Process

Any officer, elected or appointed, shall be put on academic probation if he/she receives a D or F in any subject on the weekly progress report. The officer has a period of one week to improve this grade or be removed from office.

In the case of a D, if the officer improves the grade to a C in the one week period, that officer shall then be removed from academic probation and remain in office.

In the case of an F, if the officer improves the grade to a D in the one week period, that officer shall remain on academic probation and remain in office pending further improvement. The officer must then improve that D to a C by the following week or he/she will be removed from office.

During the election process, no officer is eligible to be elected or appointed to an office if he/she has a D or F in any subject on the weekly progress report on the date of elections. The one exception to this rule is if a currently serving officer was on probation for receiving an F the previous week and has improved that grade to a D. The officer would then have a one week period to improve that D in order to remain in office.

In the event that the D or F is in Science or Social Studies, the officer has an additional week to improve the grade due to the fact that these subjects are alternated.

Classroom Complaints Process

Students may place a complaint against a classmate in the Complaints box, which is reviewed daily by the peer mediators. The peer mediators will then determine whether disciplinary action is necessary or if the problem can be resolved through discussion with the individuals involved.

If the Peer Mediators are not able to successfully resolve the problem or issue between the students, they can recommend corrective measures as necessary. The corrective measures that may be recommended by the Peer Mediators are as follows:

  • A mark added next to this student's name on the Daily Behavioral Monitor sheet
  • This person's seat may be switched with another student
  • This person's seat may be moved away from the rest of the class to the back of the classroom
  • Written warning
  • Written warning and assigned to eat lunch in the office
  • Referral to Judicial Review

Depending on the severity of the complaint, any or all of these measures may be bypassed. The decision of corrective measures will vary depending on the number and severity of previous incidents and the severity of the current incident. This process is intended to help students develop a sense of responsibility for their own actions and a respect for the rights and feelings of others.
