as it was kept very secret and was strictly private. The bride and
groom left on the afternoon train for a trip to Jacksonville, Florida.

Will
McNeill, colored, was killed by another Negro by the name of Ratley at
a saw mill near Hamer one day last week. A dispute arose over
some trivial matter which resulted in Ratley pulling his pistol and
firing three bullets into McNeils's body. The wounded darky
lingered a few hours after the shooting.

March 7 - W. R. "Dol" Jackson was shot and killed by Alonzo Q.
Weatherly near Red Springs, NC, yesterday afternoon. Both were
former
residences of Marlboro County. Weatherly also killed a daughter
of J.
Locklear while in hiding.

Whit Hamilton, Jr.
has small
pox. While in Red Springs, N.C. a few weeks ago, slept in a bed in which some
one who had small pox had
been sleeping and developed the disease about eight
days ago.

Mr. Lewis Bethea
is lying critically ill at his home in east Latta. He was found
in the woods where he had been looking after cross tie cutting near
Sellers Saturday in an unconscious condition. His physician
thinks he was attacked with a congestive chill.

Carmichael was discharged
John McRae
who was a tenant on Mr S. L. Page's place near Campbell's Bridge is
charged with having burned his house in which his two children were
asleep. McRae and his wife had parted and the supposition of the
State is that the husband burned the house and cremated the
children in a spirit of revenge. However, the prosecution failed
to establish a clear case and the jury disagreed.

entered Mr. H. L. Farley's home again last Thursday and removed his
second youngest child. Tho other one was taken away a week
previous which makes the second affliction peculiarly hard to
bear. Mrs. Farley who has been very ill is slowly recovering.

T. J. Drew, editor of the Hartsville Messenger, died Sunday after a
brief illness. Mr. Drew was a native of Marion county and quite a
successful newspaper man. He leaves a number of relatives all of
whom reside below he court house.

here last week. Mr. Norton was about 78 years of age, having
served in both the Mexican and Civil wars. He leaves a wife and

Charlotte,
NC - August 30 - A special from Bennettsville, SC, tells of a homicide
at Red Hill near there today. Calvin Hyatt shooting and killing Malcom
Brewer. The trouble was over the arrest of Brewer's son by Hyatt, who
was a constable. Brewer is said to have assaulted Hyatt when the
officer shot him. Both parties are white.

Wm.
McCall, a well-known colored man, died at Neil Bethea's residence
Saturday night after a short illness. McCall had been engaged in
the bicycle business here for a number of years and by his thrift and
economy had accumulated a nice little property. He was above the
average intellectually and morally and was looked upon as a leader of
his race. He was buried by the Masons Sunday afternoon, of which
order he was a prominent member.

morning at 9 o'clock, Miss Hattie Spivey and Mr. Charles Atkinson were
united in marriage. Rev. I. P. Hedgepeth officiated. Attendants were
Miss Addie Lewis and Mr. Brant Atkinson. The bride is a daughter of Mr.
John Spivey of Salters Depot, SC. and the groom in the son of Mr.
Hybert Atkinson of this county.
