DUNBAR AND ITS PEOPLE

The Dillon Herald
February 8, 1906

Well, since we last called upon you we have had many ups and downs, and more downs than ups mixed in.  Our faithful Balaam that never fails gave out on us, and yielded though reluctantly to an attack of grippe or something about as bad which has rendered him kinder indisposed for the past few days.  And part of the time when we were not stopped for a rest or a chat we joined in the wake of the pedestrian who is always satisfied and never weary.  Yet not being used to it for several years past we will not forget it soon.  And another "down" was the weather.  Just as the roads were kinder getting in shape for you to go over dry-foot, the cold spell came and wet everything and got the roads worse than ever, so, how can a man help but grumble a little sometimes?

But now we'll hold up on this.  We've talked enough on this subject since we've been out on the roads to build a road all over the country, yet they do not seem to improve much no matter what we say.

We have been about very little here of late so our report is necessarily short this week.  We paid Dunbar a short visit however, which deserves some mention as this town is by no means forgetful of The Herald.

Dunbar is a thriving and growing village.  It is across into Marlboro county, but The Herald is not altogether lost there.  It is backed by fine farm lands and good farmers.  This is a fine point for fertilizers and cotton seed and the shipping of these articles in and out is immense.  This is also a good business centre-Messrs. C. F. Dunbar, Stubbs and Stanton and Barrington and Stanton all conduct successful stores here.  The first two named firms carry a full line of general merchandise while the latter deals mostly in groceries.  A new firm is opening business here, The Dunbar Mercantile Co., of which Messrs. L. D. Smith and McQueen Bros., are the corporation.  "Dick McQueen, well-known and popular in Dillon is secretary and treasurer.  They will do a furnishing business and we bespeak for them a successful career.
