Sorting Out the William Trivettes

If you descend from a William Trivette, it’s difficult to sort them out because there are so many of them.  In rows one through four below I present some of the census entries for four of the third generation William’s – grandsons of John and Richard.  Rows five, six, and seven, I’m not sure of.

(living in Alms House)

Row 1

This William is the second child of William Sr.  I can’t explain who Washington is in the 1870 entry, but I can explain the discrepancy in Amanda’s age between 1850 and 1860: William was actually married twice, and each woman was named Amanda.  There was a marriage bond entered in Ashe County in December, 1844 for Amanda McGuire and William Trivett.  But the 1900 Washington County, Virginia census shows William M. and Mandy M. Trivett.  It also shows this Amanda was born in November, 1840 and that they had been married 41 years, implying they were married in 1859.  This accounts for the 20 year old Amanda in the 1860 census.

Row 2

This is the first child of Lazarus.  The Mary A. might actually stand for Mary Amanda.

Row 3

This William is the second child of Solomon.

Row 4

This is the fifth child of Owen.  The discrepancy in William’s age in the 1860 Ashe County census is either an error on the part of the enumerator, or incorrect information was provided to him.  In 1870 he is living in Pike County, Kentucky with his second wife, Mary.  In 1880, William resides with his third wife Millie Ann.  See the discussion of William H. Trivette in the section The Descendants of John and Richard Trivette.

Another problem with the 1860 census entry is daughter Delpha’s age.  The census taker was supposed to record information as it existed on June 1, 1860.  But the 1900 Washington County, Tennessee census shows Delpha was born in December, 1858, so her age should have been shown as one year old, not two.

Row 5

All members of this household show North Carolina as their birthplace, so the family was a recent transplant from North Carolina.  The parents of both William and Pheba Jean also show North Carolina as their birthplace.  Four households away is Charles and Malinda Trivett, ages 21 and 19, respectively.  Their birthplaces and those of their parents are shown as North Carolina.  There are no other household members.

Row 6

I know the answer to this one.  In the 1900 Watauga County census, child Leroy is shown as 44 years old.  In the 1920 Watauga County census, child Ross is shown as 53 years old.  The problem is their surnames are shown as Triplett, not Tribett.  Be prepared to question everything.

Row 7

This man is William Sr., the father of the William in Row 1.  The household contains over 20 people, and the head of household, Reuben Wallace, is listed as “alms house keeper.”  Alms house is an old term for poor house.  Several of the residents are shown as “inmate”, including William, but it is not likely the term implied legal incarceration.
