Here are some Reviews and comments from two people that went to this show:
__________________________________________________________
Holy $#*!! Well as I'm sure you've heard by now, this was the concert to end all
concerts! From the top, Phil and Co. came out with Warren and stated the Jam ->
Dark Star, I was pumped! Jimmy Herring is a Guitar God! Then they played one of
my favorite tunes, the one that got me into the Dead, Unbroken Chain, how sweet,
so new to Warren that he had to have the sheet music in front of him. All this
before 7:30!!!
This is where it starts to cook. I know you Rider, hot hot hot then a beautiful
Black Peter back into Dark Star(start to get numb at this point)then into the
Wheel! I was beside myself! Then they play Doin'That Rag, sweet, and then
Sunshine of your Love with POhil dropping some many Phil bombs it was
incredible, I've never heard Phil and Co. sound so good, and this is all done
before 8:10, this is when I knew it was gonna be a long night!(Can't wait for
Phil at the Beacon) Next up after 15 min. were the Allmans with Warren of
course. A rollicking Trouble No More to start things up was right on the money,
followed by a smoking Black Hearted Woman followed by an sweet Stand Back. Then
they did something I was sure they wouldn't, they played Jessica without Dickey!
Very Weird, but very good! This Jimmy Herring guy is outta control, is there
anything he can't do! Him and Warren were goin' at it! From here they brought
out Little Milton and played a blues tune, and then Soulshine(@9:20) which
almost had everyone in tears, except when little milton would shutup at the end
of it and just kept singing, damn sure better than rain. Exit Little Milton, and
enter Chris and Rich. Well Dreams happened, and Rich nearly gave me a heart
attack with the solo he took! I mean he went off with the first solo, I've never
seen him do that before, rhythm player my ass! He took at least a 5 min. solo
and was tearing it up! No more Rich bashing from me! Chris and Gregg traded
verses and that was nice. Exit Chris and Rich, and enter Mr. Lesh(who got loads
of applause everytime he hit the stage) Franklins Tower sent the people around
me into a frenzy! Listening to Warren solo over those A and D chords was a thing
of beauty! Did I mention how Jimmy Herring is the man. And all this before 9:50!
Starting to feel woozy! Then the Crowes came out and didn't play one original
song? I don't get it, they didn't have to worry about upstaging anyone. They
played a short set that was very mellow I thought. I read in another review that
they were really jamming, but it was a little too slow for me. Then The Mule!
Epic stuff! They had so many people back stage that it was tough to tell who was
on stage. Hootie was even there. Merl Saunders was sweet on GDTRFB, and
Lovelight. I really dug the Blue Floyd stuff, but no Marc, that was weak. And to
close the show, they played a beautiful I shall be Released. I'll never was
these ears again. The crowd there was kinda strange, at no point did people seem
that into it. Alot of swaying but not alot of rockin' out. Loads of guys, not
many women. $5 Heinekens and $4 Buds. - [ellismoster]

These are random thoughts and my intitial memories the morning after: I'm
probably leaving a lot out as the show started at 7pm and ended At 1 am, and I'm
now sitting in work at 9 in the morning. It was a lot of music and I'm still
taking it all in. So forgive me if this post is all over the place. There were
three fifteen minute breaks. One after Lesh, one after Allmans, one after the
Crowes.
They were taping the shows with three Beta cameras and there were a good amount
of tapers, so look for those. I hear the cameras were for a home video or a VH1
special.. Couldn't confirm either. An amazing, beautiful night of music. Phil
Lesh opend the show promptly at 7 and played for an hour. Highlights included "I
know you Rider" and "Sunshine of Your Love". Warrem was on stage the whole time
with Phil and Jimmy Herring sounded incredible.
Next, came the Allman with Haynes and Herring on Guitar. Highlights included
"Black hearted woman","Soulshine", and then they brought out Lil' Milton for a
few numbers. Then they brought out CHRIS AND RICH and played Dreams! Chris and
Gregg traded verses and it was a magic moment. Rich took the first solo on slide
guitar and he turned a lot of people there (at least the ones around me) on to
how talented he is. Then Warren's solo - 'nuff said.
Just a note: Warren was on stage for the entire 6 hour shouw except for the
first two Crowes songs. He played amazing and since he seemed to be closest to
Allen Woody, it was fitting that it was Warrens' night all the way and he was up
to the task. Allen Woody would have been proud.
Next the Allmans brought out Phil Lesh and along witht the Allmans they played
"Franklin's Tower"!
Next came the Crowes and you don't need me to tell you how great that was. It
was great to hear Boomer's story again, and Chevrolet with a Haynes solo was too
much for words. It was the jamming Crowes of old and it brought back a lot of
memories of shows past.
Next came Mule with the bassist from Widespread Panic sitting in for Woody.
Highlights included a killer version of "Turn on your Lovelight" and my personal
favorite tune of the enitre evening, the Traffic classic "Low Spark of High
Heeled Boys".
Then the jamming and interplay took off with Berry Oakley, Jr. and members of
Blue Floyd (no Marc Ford) playing "Shine on you Crazy Diamond" and "Wish you
Were Here". Quite appropriate, quite amazing. They showd pics and video of Allen
Woody on the screen throughout. Other highlights was a great version of
Skynyrds' "Simple Man" with Artimus Pyle on Drums. Leslie West from Mountain and
came out and did "Mississippi Queen" and something else.
AUDLEY AND ED came out woth Mule and friends to do 'Simple Man'. Both did great
solos. Plus, it was cool to see them come out w/o RICH AND CHRIS.
Darius Rucker (Hootie) came out with Kevin Kinney (?) with a guy from the band
drivin and cryin to do "Straight to Hell". a very cool, fun, country/folk/rock
tune.
While there were incredible solos on guitar all night, and it was Warrens'
stage, RICH may have come through with the most memorable on 'Dreams'.
Crowes...Allmans...same stage at once! Rich went first after the first verse and
WOW! WOW! WOW! Wait until you hear this one on the tapes! And the crowd
definitely recognized and appreciated the effort. When CHRIS sang his verse he
gave them his own spin (like he does so well). then Gregg would sing in his
style. Back and forth, back and forth. (Pause for tears of joy)....
During Mule and Freinds Lesh came out and so did CHRIS and they did "Goin' Down
the Road Feelin' Bad"!
Crowes got the shortest set. I think it was because the other two bands went
long and they weren't going to shorten Mule's set and the jam. But let me tell
you, it didn't matter. If you felt short changed at this show, you're nuts. The
covers we heard, the reason they were playing them , and the talent level on
that stage all night were truly speical. More to come if it pops into my very
hazy head.
Again, it was a magical evening of incredible music, on a stage filled with
numerous amounts of amazing musicians. it was a fitting tribute to well-liked,
talented, and very much missed Allen Woody. - [jgoodin]
