Stupid AT&T!read at your own risk.I
had DSL lite for years which was okay for my uses, but then the speeds
dropped from 700 to 800kbs to 145 kbs (about twice as fast as dialup).
They said the lines checked fine. A tech said they tested
fine under his login credentials, but were slow under my credentials
for some reason (because they slowed mine down on purpose- see below).
He said everything was fine on my end. He was going to have
them reset my ID and password. This didn't do anything, so we
called back. The lady was adamant that something was messed up on my
end. I calmly explained that I've built a dozen computers,
networked ours and have even cleaned viruses from friend's computers so
I know what I'm doing. (I did this with the first lady as well
while she proceeded to tell me to unplug modem, re-plug it in, take it
out of network, etc... for the next 20 minutes before she relented and
sent the tech). This new lady wouldn't let us talk to a tech and
kept telling us that we wouldn't get the 786kbs she does, that ours
would be lower. I said, "Yes, but not that much lower. I
should be getting 400 to 700kbs," and she said I'm not converting
numbers and they're not comparable. What?!! Okay, let's
convert numbers, my 145kilobits per second or so is about 20kbyte per second or so. She kept
on with the "You won't get our 786kbs speed." We said that if
they can't get the speeds fixed, we may cancel. She gave us a
phone number and said call and cancel. Guess what? WE DID,
or rather, we are getting ready to - as soon as we notify everyone on
our email list and the internet businesses we deal with. We found
out that you don't have to buy basic cable anymore to get Internet, so
we signed up, and it's faster than even the fastest DSL. Guess
what? No speed problems on my network - just like I tried to tell
them - 9Mbs, not 0.145Mbs! Not only are we going to cancel DSL,
we are cancelling the phone, too. We only kept it to have DSL.
My wife and girls all have cell phones. I don't. So
now I get to sign up for a cell phone for $10. Since Cingular was
bought by AT&T, when the cell phone contract runs out, we are going
to Verizon - maybe even the Droid! So take that AT&T!!!
You A-holes could have just offered to up our DSL for nothing
(well, $15 lost profit) and kept $100's of dollars of our business (and
all those profits), but instead, you've lost it all. Well, we've
been finding out from friends and Internet boards that AT&T's
customer service sucks. I even see where some people accuse them
of selling too much DSL bandwidth and they are slowly lowering
everyone's DSL speeds. I believe it. Anyone with AT&T
stock better sell. They are going down with customer service like
that! Only the i-phone is keeping them in business now, but with
Droid, who knows? If Apple were smart, they'd let other providers
handle the i-phone.
Okay, I feel better, now. :-)
