Pneumococcal Infection of the Brain Image

This is the brain of a person who died from a Pneumococcal brain infection. The brain is covered with pus from the infection. Pneumococcal disease can be very dangerous. Thousands of people die from it every year, especially adults over 65 years of age and young children. The Pneumococcal germ usually infects the lungs or the brain. It spreads between people by coughing or sneezing. Complications include lung infections, blood infections, brain damage, and death.
