Vaccine Preventable Diseases



Below is a list of diseases which can be prevented with routine vaccinations. Click on the link in each section to see a picture of that disease.


DIPHTHERIA - A thick covering on the back of the throat which can cause breathing problems, paralysis, heart failure, and even death.

TETANUS - Serious, painful spasms of all muscles. Can cause a painful "locking" of the jaw making it impossible to open mouth or swallow. Can lead to death.

PERTUSSIS (Whooping Cough) - Severe coughing spells that can lead to pneumonia, seizures, brain damage, or death.

POLIO - Causes paralysis of the arms and legs and can eventually lead to death.

MEASLES - A virus that causes rash, cough, runny nose, eye irritation, and fever. It can lead to ear infection, pneumonia, seizures, brain damage, and death.

MUMPS - A virus that causes fever, headache, and swollen glands. It can lead to deafness, meningitis, painful swelling of the testicles or ovaries, and sometimes death.

HEPATITIS A - A virus that causes mild "flu-like" symptoms, jaundice, severe stomach cramping, and diarrhea. Often requires hospitalization. In rare cases, it can cause death.

HEPATITIS B - The Hepatitis B virus can cause short-term (acute) illness that leads to loss of appetite, tiredness, diarrhea, and vomiting, jaundice, pain in muscles, joints, and stomach.

HAEMOPHILUS INFLUENZAE TYPE B (Hib) - A disease that can cause meningitis (infection of the brain and spinal cord coverings), lasting brain damage, pneumonia, severe swelling of the throat, infections of the blood, joints, bones and covering of the heart. It can eventually lead to death.

VARICELLA (ChickenPox) - A virus which causes a rash, itching, fever, and tiredness. It can lead to severe skin infection, scars, pneumonia, brain damage, or death.

RUBELLA (German Measles) - A disease that causes rash, mild fever, swollen glands, and arthritis (mostly in women).

PNEUMOCOCCAL DISEASE - a leading cause of serious illness in children and adults throughout the world. It can attack different parts of the body. When pneumococcal bacteria invade the lungs, they cause pneumonia; when they invade the bloodstream, they cause bacteremia; and when they invade the covering of the brain, they cause meningitis. They can cause ear and sinus infections.
