HAEMOPHILUS INFLUENZAE TYPE B (Hib)

This infant has severe vasculitis with disseminated intravascular coagulation (DIC) and gangrene of the hand, secondary to Haemophilus Influenzae Type B Septicemia. This was before the availability of the Hib vaccine.

This child has a swollen face due to Hib infection. The tissue under the skin covering the jaw and cheek is infected and the infection is spreading into her face. Complications of Hib infection include brain damage, seizures, paralysis, hearing loss, and death.
