Sermon 3: “Great Numbers Need to be Taught” Acts 11:26:

 

Interlinear Translation: “and having found him he brought him to Antioch. And it came to pass they a year whole were gathered in the assembly, and taught a crowd large: and were called first in Antioch the disciples Christians.”

 

Strong’s Concordance Translation: “AND WHEN HE HAD FOUND HIM = get, obtain, perceive, see. HE BROUGH HIM TO ANTIOCH = to lead, by implication to bring, drive, reflexive go, specially pass time, or figuratively induce, be, bring forth, carry, let go, keep, lead away, go. AND IT CAME TO PASS = to cause to be, generate, to become, come into being. THAT A WHOLE YEAR = all, complete in extent, amount, time or degree; altogether, every whit, throughout. THEY ASSEMBLED THEMSELVES = to lead together, i.e. collect or convene; specially to entertain hospitably, accompany, assemble selves together, bestow, come together, gather selves together, gather up, lead into, resort, take in. WITH THE CHURCH = a calling out, i.e. concretely a popular meeting, especially a religious congregation, community of of members on earth, assembly, origin call. AND TAUGHT = a prolific form of a primary verb to learn, to teach in the same broad application. MUCH = to arrive competent as if coming in season, i.e. ample in amount or fit in character, able, content enough, good, great, large, long while, many, meet, security, sore, sufficient, worthy. PEOPLE = a vehicle, a throng as borne along, by implication the rabble, by extension a class of people, figuratively a riot, company, multitude, press. AND THE DISCIPLES = a learner, i.e. pupil, to learn in any way, understand, WERE CALLED CHRISTIANS = followers of Christ, followers of the Anointed, followers of the Messiah. FIRST = first in time, place, order, or importance, at the beginning, chiefly at, chiefly at the first of all. IN ANTIOCH = it is called the “Crown of the East.”
