The Chesterton Society of Atlanta meets on the last Wednesday of each month to discuss the works of the English essayist, novelist, apologist, poet, philosopher (etc.) G. K. Chesterton.
Beginning in July 2007, we will read and discuss Chesterton's madcap philosophical novel Manalive. After talking about it for 2-4 meetings, we will probably talk about one of his nonfiction books, perhaps Heretics or What I Saw in America.
Our next several meetings will be on:
If you order from the American Chesterton Society, mention that you are a member of the Chesterton Society of Atlanta to get 20% off book purchases. (Their member prices are in some cases lower than Amazon's discounted prices for the same books.) If you actually join the American Chesterton Society, of course, you'll get Gilbert! magazine and other perks besides the discount on book purchases. By paying membership dues, or just buying books from them, you also support their Chestertonian research, including making Chesterton's lost works available as etexts.
The book discussion will start at about 7:30 pm; about 9:00 pm we may adjourn to a nearby establishment (such as the Five Seasons Brewery on Roswell Road) for eatables and drinkables.
For general questions about the Chesterton Society of Atlanta, or to be added to our mailing list (low traffic; one or two emails per month with meeting announcements/reminders), email Trevor Berger (chesterton_atl at bellsouth dot net). You can subscribe to the mailing list directly by sending email to chesterton-atlanta-subscribe at googlegroups dot com.
From the north or northeast, take I-285 to exit 25, Roswell Road/Sandy Springs. Turn left at the exit onto Roswell Road and go about a mile south, past several lights. When you see a a Coldwell Banker sign on your right, you need to get into the right turn lane for Mount Paran Road. Go about 2.5 miles along Mount Paran Road, past several four-way stops. When you pass Jett Road (another four-way stop) you're nearly to Holy Spirit Catholic Church, which is on the southeast corner of Mount Paran Road and Northside Drive (there's a "Country Store" with a large Coca-Cola sign on the northwest corner). Go past the church and turn left onto Northside Drive, then turn left into the lower driveway of the church, which is also the main entrance to the school.
Park in the lower right part of the parking lot, which is near the Liberal Arts building, to your right. The library is straight ahead across the lobby from the main entrance to the building; we meet in the comfy chairs in the atrium when there are six or fewer of us, or in the board room (entrances to either side of the fireplace) when we are more numerous.
For other directions, you can use one of these map sites to get automated directions from your address,
or look at the directions page at Holy Spirit Prep's website. You want the Upper School directions, at the top of the page.
I've looked around on the MARTA web site and haven't found a bus route that goes along Northside Drive or Mount Paran Road at this point. It looks as though, if there were such a route, it would run out of Lindbergh or Lenox station. If you find it, let me know. If you need me to pick you up at a MARTA station on my way to the meetings, let me know.
