My Ahnentafel Report
[Ancestor Listing]
(Last Updated: 07/30/2009 02:40:38 AM)
If you are related to me, I recommend that you print this report. Also, this page is always undergoing update -- so please keep checking it for changes.
An "Ahnentafel Report" documents a person's ancestors in narrative form. It is one of many standard report formats used by Genealogists to provide information on individuals shown and numbered on a Pedigree Chart. Each individual in the report is assigned a unique "Ahnentafel Number" each time the report is created (and these numbers could change when a new report is created). This number is used to identify and trace a person and the person's parents in the report and on a graphic Pedigree Chart.
The rule is that the Ahnentafel Number of person's father is exactly twice the subject's number, and the mother's number is twice the subject's number plus one. On this report, the subject (me) JOHN F. WISE is Number 1, making my father ROBERT F. WISE Jr. Number 2 and my mother PHYLLIS H. KRUPINSKA Number 3 (i.e., my father's number 2 plus 1).
These same identical Ahnentafel Numbers would show up in the respective box in a drawn Pedigree Chart. Thus, a researcher can readily relate a person in a drawn Pedigree Chart to the information in an associated Ahnentafel Report, and vice versa. Once you learn this numbering scheme, you can easily trace the bloodlines up/down the Ahnentafel Report and on any person shown in the report.
If you and your families should be in this Ahnentafel Report, and you're not, it's because I don't know ya'll exist.
All constructive comments, additions, and/or corrections are solicited and welcome.

A proud and loyal New York family with roots in "Beulahland" Georgia (my father), and Suwalki, Poland (my mother) -- whose father and sons collectively served the United States of America in the Georgia and New York Army National Guard, U.S. Army, U. S. Army Reserve, U.S. Navy, U.S. Navy Reserve, U.S. Air Force, and U.S. Air Force Reserve. Their father served in the Georgia National Guard prior to WWII, in the U.S. Army during World II, and all of their five sons served our country and the free world during the entire Cold War era, i.e., Korean War, 1st and 2nd Berlin Airlifts, Cuban Crisis, Dominican Republic Crisis, and Viet Nam. Not too shabby for poor and highly dysfunctional street kids from the streets of "Greenpernt," Brooklyn, and Dobbs Ferry and Mount Loretto children homes in New York. The father was drafted during WWII and all sons voluntarily enlisted in the mix of U.S. military branches as they reached 17 years of age.
Also, although my deceased mother was born and immigrated with her displaced family from war-torn Poland, she did her best to be a model U.S. citizen. My mom was a true U.S. patriot -- in heart, mind, and soul -- and did her best to instill the love she had for our country in her children. She was extremely proud and grateful of her U.S. citizenship and that her husband and all her sons served their country -- and up until the day she died she was a long-standing member of the Ladies Auxiliary of the Veterans of Foreign Wars (VFW). Like all mothers and wives of soldiers, sailors, and airmen, she worried and served right along with her husband and her sons.
2. Robert (Bob) Franklin Wise Jr., GA & NY NG/USA WWII, was born in Savannah, Chatham County, Georgia. He died in St. Francis Hospital, Bell, Los Angeles, California, and his ashes are buried at Rose Hill Gardens, Los Angeles, California. Son of 4. Robert Franklin Wise Sr. and 5. Naomi (Onnie) Ivannah O'Steen. Married (1st) 20 Jan 1932 to 3. Phyllis Helen Krupinska, in Greenpoint, Brooklyn, New York. Married (2nd) to Mrs. Grace-Monica Ramsey Richardson Arlen in Winterhaven, Imperial County, California, i.e., on the Fort Yuma, Quechani Indian Reservation.
3. Phyllia Helena (Phyllis Helen) Krupinska, was born in Krakow, Poland, and died in her home, at New Hyde Park, Nassau County, Long Island, New York. After divorcing her first husband [had him declared dead] Phyllis married (2nd) Alexander (Al) Wize in Williamsburgh District, Brooklyn, New York. Soon after marriage, Phyllis and her 2nd husband moved into their newly built home in New Hyde Park, Nassau County, Long Island, New York - - where they lived the remainder of their lives. [Coincidently, my mom's second husband's surname is WIZE (with a "Z") -- his family's surname was shortened by his immigrant father, from the Polish surname " WIZENSKY".]

Uncle Jim never married, and retired as a Vice President of the ADT Corporation in Manhattan, New York City. Like his brothers Bob and Joe, Uncle Jim was in the Georgia National Guard prior to WWII. When WWII started Jim enlisted and served in the NY 69th National Guard Division in Manhattan, NYC. He was never called to active duty when the U.S. Army learned his two brothers were already serving in the U.S. Army, i.e., he was classified with an "Only Surviving Son" draft deferment. Instead Uncle Jim served in the New York National Guard at Fort Hamilton, Brooklyn throughout and after WWII. During WWII Uncle Jim also attended night school (NYU) for his Bachelor and Masters Degrees in Business, worked full time delivering telegrams for Western Union, and spent almost all of his free nights, weekends, and National Guard drill time manning anti-aircraft batteries at Battery Park, Manhattan, the Navy Yard, Port of Embarkation, and Fort Hamilton, in Brooklyn, Governor's and Sandy Hook Islands in New York Bay, and at Grumman and Floyd Bennett Air Fields on Long Island, New York. Joseph (Joe)
Godfrey Wise T/Sgt., GA & NY NG/USA (WWII), was born
in Savannah, Chatham County,
Georgia, and was killed-in-action in France, and during the Normandy
Invasion. Uncle Joe served in the
Georgia and New York
National Guard, and pm active duty with the 502nd, 504th, and 506th Airborne Infantry
Regiments, and the 82nd and 101st Airborne Divisions of the U.S. Army. On Monday, 8 Dec 1941, a day after the U.S. was attacked at Pearl Harbor, Joe volunteered for active duty. Two months later he volunteered for the newly formed Parachute Infantry Regiment (PIR) of the U. S. Army. After extensive parachute and advanced infantry training, Uncle Joe and his regiment where shipped overseas and fought in the invasions and battles of Sicily, Italy, and Normandy, France. He was awarded his first Purple Heart for a forearm wound received at Anzio, Italy, and posthumously awarded a second Purple Heart and Silver Star for Heroism and Gallantry in Action during the Normandy Invasion, i.e., during a battle near Bourges, France. In December 1945 his remains were found and retrieved from a small and desolate battlefield burial site, and returned to his family in Brooklyn, New York -- at great insistence of his mother (it's another story what his mother went through to get the U.S. Army to find and return his remains). Uncle Joe was buried on 10 Feb 1946 in the WWII Veteran's Section J, Site 15927, at the Long Island National Cemetery, near Farmingdale, Long Island, New York.
Uncle Joe -- Our Never Forgotten WWII Hero In February 1946 eight surviving paratroopers from his platoon, and the two disabled and recovering buddies he rescued, traveled to New York City to attend Uncle Joe's award and burial ceremonies. The two recovering soldiers previously visited our grandparent's home in Brooklyn, New York, and during their first visit gave our family a firsthand account of what their regiment went through in North Africa, Sicily, Italy, and the Normandy invasions. They also gave a first hand account how Uncle Joe lost his life at a roadside ditch, about 50 yards from a little bridge on the main road leading into the little town of Bourges, France. The two troopers (each lost a leg and had multiple bullet wounds) described in some detail how Uncle Joe (who just a week earlier received a spot promotion to platoon Sergeant) disregarded his own safety, heroically risked his life, and rescued them when their platoon came under deadly enemy rifle, machine-gun, and mortar fire. As their patrol was ambushed by a large number of retreating German troops, the two troopers and their company Medic dashed for cover from the road and into what turned out to be an enemy minefield. The two soldiers were both hit by enemy machine gun fire, and as they stumbled to the ground they stepped on or fell on enemy land mines. Their company Medic attempted to rush to their aid but was killed by another land mine a few yards from them. They both saw Joe firing at an enemy bunker in front of them and shouted to him for help. Joe heard their cries for help over the noise of battle, looked around, and saw them in the mine field. Joe shouted back for them to stay down and hold on. Then disregarding his own safety, Joe stood up, tossed smoke grenades between himself and the enemy bunker, threw down his sub-machinegun and backpack, and dashed into the minefield as enemy riflemen and machine gunners continued to fire at him. When Joe reached the two wounded men he ignored all danger, and as enemy bullets struck all around them Joe quickly checked their medic for life, and then dashed back to them. As Joe continually spoke comforting words, he quickly tied tourniquets (their belts) on their legs and patched their gunshot and land mine wounds. Joe then rolled them over on their stomachs, grabbed both soldiers by the back of their field jacket collars and yelled: "Let's get the Hell out of here." With a man in each hand Joe literally picked them up off the ground and half-carried, half-dragged both of them at the same time -- for about thirty yards -- from the minefield and out of the enemy's field of fire. As they reached a nearby hedge-row, they said Joe literally picked them up and threw them like sacks of potatoes through the hedge and into a deep roadside ditch. Joe then dove through the hedge and into the ditch beside them. Unfortunately, as Joe was rendering additional first aid to the two men, he half stood up to quickly retrieve morphine curettes from his field jacket pocket -- he was killed instantly by the full force of a large explosion. A passing weapons carrier drove over an anti-tank mine -- not more than three or four feet behind Joe. Other men in the platoon witnessed the whole scenario, rushed to their aid -- and that's when the two wounded troopers in the ditch heard someone yell to each other that Joe had been killed by the land mine explosion. Our unforgettable Uncle Joe was a happy-go-lucky, colorful, cheerful, and charitable man. The family and his Army buddies remember that he always had a smile on his face and was the kind of guy who would give you the shirt off his back. The above photograph was taken at the insistence of his mother, in December 1942, about a week before he shipped out to North Africa. About three hours before this picture was taken, his sister-in-law (my mother) had just finished removing the insignias from his uniform and pressed his service cap for him. This photograph of my Uncle Joe captures that "happy-go-lucky" attitude and beaming smile that everyone remembers most about him. His Army buddies said "Joe was not only a nice guy, a good buddy, and our guardian angel that day in France. Joe was one of the best damn paratrooper and platoon Sergeant in the U.S. Army." I can't help but feel that the movie "Band of Brothers" captures the essence of all that our uncle Joe and his awesome and heroic WWII paratroopers were all about. |

38. Elijah Strickland, CSA-GA 7th Calvary, born November 17, 1811 in Chatham County, Georgia. Died between 1870-1880 in place unknown (assume Bryan County, Georgia). Said to be buried with his wife in an unmarked grave in the Wise Cemetery (Old Backwater Cemetery), near Eden [became Clyde in 1886], Bryan County, Georgia. Son of 76. David Jonathan Strickland (1780-1873) and his wife 77. Treacy Martin (1789-1856), of Barnwell District, English Province of South Carolina, Burke, Screven, Tattnall, Bulloch, Bryan, and Ware Counties, Georgia. Elijah married 39. Delilah (Della) Futch August 18, 1832 at the old Onesimus Futch Plantation (near Statesborough, not Statesboro), where Bulloch Bay is located, in lower SE Bulloch County, Georgia.
NOTE: Recent findings explain why the family was not listed on the Bryan County, Georgia U.S. Census of 1860. In 1860 census of Florida, Elijah, his wife Della, and their younger children were living in Putnam County, Florida. In 1862 Elijah and his family came back to Bryan County, Georgia, where Elijah and his son John enlisted in the Confederate Army, i.e., Company K, 7th Georgia Calvary Regiment. Evidently Elijah returned from Florida to his native Bryan County, Georgia to join the Confederate Army with his son, friends, and neighbors. It was said that his son John was killed-in-action and buried in an unmarked mass grave in the woods near Fort McAllister. Elijah evidently survived the Civil War and in 1880 Elijah's wife Della is recorded as a widow and living in the household of her daughter Martha near Rhoden Church, Roding, Bryan County, Georgia.

(A Proud Original NewYork Dutch Settler, and New Jersey, Pennsylvania, and Georgia Family of the Colonial and Revolutionary War Eras)
68. Sylvanus Bird, Georgia Loyalist, was born 1741 in old Lancaster County (now Berks County), English Province of Pennsylvania. Died of wounds a few days after January 27, 1779, and probably died at his Black Creek Plantation home then in Effingham County, Georgia. Georgia. Sylvanus was a son of 136. Burgeon Bird and his wife 137. Mary Robeson. Married 69. Dinah (Diana) Stafford (1744-c1811) March 4, 1768 in Jerusalem Church, Ebenezer, St. Philip Parish, English Province of Georgia (became Effingham County, Georgia).
Sylvanus died a few days after being mortally wounded on the night of January 27, 1779, and during a supposed Indian attack at the neighboring English Governor Sir James Wright's plantation. His sister, along with her husband and their infant son, and the plantation overseer were killed during that same attack. Story is that Sylvanus, his sister Margaret, her husband John Hearn (Harn) Jr., their infant son, and their plantation overseer Joseph Weatherly were accused of being British Loyalists and were attacked by their local rebel neighbors [Georgia Militia soldiers] dressed as Indians -- for aiding and abetting British Tories and officials during the Revolutionary War. Evidently they fled from their Black Creek Plantation homes, and crossed the Ogeechee River to English Governor James Wright's Plantation for protection. Apparently Sylvanus' wife Dinah Stafford Bird (1747-c1809) was not injured and survived the attack.
69. Dinah (Diana) Stafford, born about 1744 in Bath Precinct, Beaufort County, English Province of North Carolina. Died after 1811 in Telfair County, Georgia. Daughter of 138. Thomas Peter Stafford and his wife 139. Mariah ???. After her husband Sylvanus Bird (1741-1779) was killed, Dinah married (2nd) about 1788 to James Bulloch in Bryan County, Georgia.
Children of Sylvanus and his wife Dinah Stafford are:
| i. | Dinah Bird, born December 17, 1768 in Georgia Creek Indian Lands (became part of Telfair County), English Province of Georgia. Married William Byron March 29, 1799 in Jerusalem Church, Ebenezer, Effingham County, Georgia. | |

Alec was a planter and developed his own plantation home site near Register, Bulloch County, Georgia. He had farm and grazing lands in both Bulloch and Bryan Counties, Georgia, and about 1830, he and his wife moved to his father-in-law's plantation home site, in Black Creek, Bryan County, Georgia. About 1831-1832 Alec and his wife retired and removed to Madison County, Florida. |

70. Richard T. Harvey Sr., RS-VA, born about 1759 in English Province of Virginia or Carteret County, English Province of North Carolina. Died about 1824 at home on his plantation on Black Creek, Bryan County, Georgia. Son of 140. Lemuel Harvey Sr. RS-VA and his wife 141. Sarah ???. Married 71. Elizabeth Morrell about 1775 in Carteret County, English Province of North Carolina. Richard, his father, and his father-in-law served as Revolutionary Soldiers of Virginia. Richard served at Valley Forge, Pennsylvania during that harsh, famous, and historical winter of 1776-1777. Other members of his family, his father-in-law, may also have been with him at Valley Forge. Apparently Richard had enough of the cold winters of the northern states, and when his enlistment was up in 1777 he migrated southward with his new wife and baby from North Carolina to Georgia.
71. Elizabeth Morrell, born about 1761 in English Province of Virginia or Carteret County, English Province of North Carolina. Died about 1840 at the family plantation on Black Creek, Bryan County, Georgia. Daughter of 142. John Morrell and his wife 143. Hannah ??? (nee: unknown).

(nee: unknown) about 1790 in Hertford County, North Carolina. Abraham and his brothers are said to have been Revolutionary Militia Soldiers in the Province of North Carolina, but no proof of this has been found as of this writing. Abraham may have been married more than once, and the family came to Georgia sometime between 1803-1805. Recent finding indicates that this family may have resided in Richmond and Warren Counties, Georgia before settling in Bulloch County, Georgia.
73. Celia ??? (nee: unknown), born about 1755 in Bertie County, English Province of North Carolina. Died after 1830 in Bulloch County, Georgia.

76. David Jonathan Strickland, born January 23, Jan 1780 near Amelia Towne, Santee River Settlement, old Orangeburgh District, English Province of South Carolina. Died March 14, 1873 in Pierce County, Georgia [now part of Brantley County, Georgia]. David and his wife are buried side-by-side in the High Bluff Primitive Baptist Church Cemetery, located in present Brantley County, Georgia. David was the son of 152. John Strickland Jr. RS-NC (c1749-1838) and his wife 153. Appa (Appie) ??? (nee: unknown). David married 77. Treacy Martin (1789-1856) [possibly his 1st cousin ?] January 1, 1802 in Barnwell District, South Carolina. Findings thus far indicate that David and his family moved from Barnwell County, South Carolina to Georgia around 1804, and resided with relatives in Burke, Screven, and Tattnall Counties, Georgia, before settling and establishing a homesite and plantation in the Red Hill area of SE Bulloch County, Georgia.
77. Treacy Martin, born about 1789 at Cheraw's Nest, Pee Dee River Settlement, old Darlington District, South Carolina. Died March 18, 1856 at her son-in-law William Griffin's Plantation "Mulberry Grove," then in Ware County, Georgia [now part of Brantley County, Georgia]. Daughter of 154. James Martin Sr. and his 1st wife 155. Mary ??? (nee: unknown). Note that this compiler found that the surname "Treacy" is found in present day south central and southwestern North Carolina, and may have been the surname of Treacy's ancestors.
| NOTE
TO STRICKLAND FAMILY RESEARCHERS: In 1939 there were notes found on the pages and
covers of this family's Bible that said David's mother 153. Appie ??? (nee: unknown) and
Treacy's mother ??? (name unknown) were related, and were from a sub-group
of North Carolina Cherokees (later identified as Croatan Native Americans,
who are recognized since 1926 as the North Carolina "Lumbee"
Tribe). Also, Treacy and her younger
half-sister Nancy Ann (Mercy) Martin Strickland (see below) were said to be granddaughters
of a prominent Lumbee Native American Indian leader, and were jokingly and
affectionately referred to as the family's "Indian Princesses." Moreover, Treacy and
her younger sister (who also became her daughter-in-law) Mercy Martin may have been nieces of
her husband David's mother 153. Appa (Appie) ??? (nee: unknown). Notes in the old David Jonathan Strickland Family Bible stated that all of David and Treacy's children and grandchildren were of average height, had straight dark hair, high cheek bones, heavily-tanned skin color, with "cold, piercing, blue, and squinty eyes." That would mean that there are three successive generations in this family line that had the physical characteristics of Native American Indians. An old photograph of a great granddaughter (i.e., her son John's daughter ELIZABETH) was seen by this compiler in 1992 - - and it clearly shows that Treacy's granddaughter had all the physical Native American Indian characteristics that were noted in this family's Bible (except I couldn't determine the color of her eyes in the black and white photograph). ASIDE: I thought it worthy to also mention that our cousin Margie Hendrix Barden brought it to my attention that a portrait exists of her GG-grandmother, i.e., David and Treacy's granddaughter MARY FRANCES STRICKLAND BENNETT. When enlarged by this compiler, the portrait shows that as an adult MARY appears to have dark red (auburn) hair and blue eyes. This probably indicates that the physical attributes of our Native American physical attributes started changing in MARY's generation. ASIDE: Although I am a direct male WISE descendant, two of my DNA tests found a single Native American Indian marker in my DNA. I know of no Native Americans in my WISE bloodline, but I've been advised by the testing laboratory that my Native American DNA marker most likely comes from my Strickland ancestors. Moreover, these same tests found that my dominant DNA markers indicate Scottish ancestry, which further confirms that my WISE/WYSE ancestors were, in fact, from Scottish ancestry -- and further back in time from pre-medieval Anglo-Saxon ancestors found in Britannia (England). |
The children of David and his wife Treacy Martin were:

Generation No. 8 (My GGGGG-Grandparents)
128. John Wise [Sr.] RS-SC Militia. It is recorded that he was born 1721 in Arbuthnot Parish, Kincardine, Kincardineshire, Scotland. He was the son of David Wise (b. circa 1700) and his wife ??? (name unknown), of Kincardine, Kincardineshire, Scotland. It is also recorded that John married Margaret Tait (born 1722), in Maryculter Parish Church, Kincardinshire, Scotland. John and his sons William and Jacob served in the South Carolina Militia during the American Revolutionary War. In 1780 John Sr. was arrested by the English Army at his plantation home on Horse Creek for providing aid and comfort to the local rebels (South Carolina Militia soldiers). He died that same year while imprisoned aboard the old English Prisoner-of-War ship "Forbay" in Charles Towne Harbor, South Carolina. His burial place is unknown, i.e., he may have been buried at sea, near Charleston Harbor.
129. Margaret Tait was born 1722 in Maryculter Parish, Kincardine, Kincardinshire, Scotland. Margaret is the daughter of William Tait and his wife Margaret Colley, of Maryculter Parish, Kincardineshire, Scotland. She was also the paternal granddaughter of John Tait and Elizabeth Edward, probably also from Kincardine, Kincardineshire, Scotland. Presume she died at the family plantation home at Wise Mill, on Horse Creek, Edgefield District, South Carolina.

DAR Revolutionary Soldier markers were placed on the graves of Onesimus and his sons in July of 1918. If any present day descendants have a record of our Futch relatives buried in this destroyed family cemetery, please contact me at Email address jfwise@bellsouth.net. If possible, I'd like to make sure that our family members buried in this old cemetery site are formally documented. I'd also like to see all of us descendants of Onesimus Sr. collectively place a bronze plaque on the nearby shoreline of Bulloch Bay to honor all those who were buried there - - and include mention that Onesimus Futch Sr. and his older sons were honorable Revolutionary Soldiers of North and South Carolina. |

Abraham Bird (Bort), born about 1710 in the Reformed Dutch Church settlement, Raritan Township, Somerset County, English Province of New Jersey. No further record is found on Abraham as of this writing. However, the compiler speculates that this Abraham Bird may have married and also migrated to Georgia. If true, then Abraham's branch of the family may account for other Bird/Byrd lines that exist in the southern U.S., from English Colonial times to the present. |

277. Ann Wyatt, born about 1702 in England; died in English Province of North Carolina. She was the daughter of 554. John Wyatt and his wife 555. ??? (name unknown).
| Please forgive me, but the information I had entered here was recently found to be incomplete and incorrect. I've been repeatedly notified that the above John Stafford was a Senior (Sr.), and it was his son John Stafford Jr. who was the father of Thomas Peter Stafford. Seems I've had a whole generation "missing" from what I was originally provided on this family. Also, as I originally suspected, there were more children in this family. I have updated my database, but it's going to take some time to redo this web page with these (and a whole lot of other) updates. I will make these updates and corrections, but I simply cannot stop my world and the other major/higher priority projects I currently have in the mill at this writing. |

John
Morrell RS-VA, born about 1735 in English Province of Virginia. Died about 1791-1792
at home on his Black Creek Plantation, in Bryan County, Georgia. Married 143. Hannah ???
(nee: unknown) about 1757 in Carteret County, English Province of North Carolina.
Descendants say that John served at Valley Forge, Pennsylvania during that infamous winter
of 1776-1777. John and his four teenaged sons are said to have been Revolutionary Militia Soldiers of Virginia and Carteret County, English Province of North Carolina, but a record of their military service has not yet been found. |
304. John Strickland Sr. RS-NC, born about 1729 in Isle of Wight County, English Province of Virginia. Died 1788 in Robeson County, North Carolina. Parents of this person is unproven and confusing at this writing. The majority of present day researchers have determined that he is a son of a William Strickland of English Province of Virginia and/or old Bladen or old Halifax County, English Province of North Carolina.
305. Elizabeth ??? (nee: unknown), born between 1729-1732 in English Province of Virginia or North Carolina. Probably died in Robeson County, North Carolina.
| PLEASE NOTE: There is much conflicting and confusing information among researchers on just who the parents are of this JOHN. Just about every day later information is found or rationalized that logically disproves or discredits previously derived information. It is for this reason that I have deleted all subsequent STRICKLAND ancestor entries from this Ahnentafel Report. Present day researchers have determined that this person's father was a WILLIAM STRICKLAND, but there are so many WILLIAM STRICKLAND's existing in NC that his father's identity is speculative at best. Based on all information presently available to me, John could be the son of William Strickland, Jr. (b. c1690) and his wife Mary Whitehead, of Isle of Wight, English Province of Virginia, OR William Strickland and his wife Oliff (Olive) Pittman, of the English Province of NC. I ask all family members to please "stay loose" on this right now, i.e., because there are at least a "zillion" people researching and sorting out North Carolina Stricklands at this writing. This research has been going on for over 70 years now - - and it is just a matter of time (hopefully) before a tidbit of information is found that will pin down the correct, or at least determine who his "most logical" parents could be. |
Children of John Strickland Sr. RS-NC and his wife Elizabeth ??? are (there may be more children):
| 152 | i. | John Strickland Jr. RS-NC, born about 1749 in old Edgecombe County, English Province of North Carolina [location became part of Halifax County, North Carolina]. Died 1838 at home on his plantation located between Mushmelon and Watermelon Creeks, Tattnall County, Georgia. Married 153. Appa (Appie) ??? between 1768-1770 in old Bladen County, English Province of North Carolina. Descendants recorded in a family Bible that his wife Appie was a mixed Cherokee and Lumbee Native American Indian and a "Princess," i.e., a daughter of a Lumbee Indian Chief or sub-Chief (English white man's titles) from southeastern North Carolina, i.e., a part of North Carolina where Cherokees and Lumbees settled along the main Lumbee (now called Lumbar) River. His wife Appie was also an older cousin or Aunt to the sisters Treacy and Mercy Martin, who were also called Indian "Princesses" - - and who married his son David Jonathan Strickland (1780-1873), as well as his grandson John Strickland Sr. (1804-1879), respectively. Descendants documented that John, his father, his uncles, and his brothers are said to have all been Revolutionary Militia Soldiers of North Carolina, but a record of their service has not been found as of this writing. |
ii. |
Flora Strickland, born about 1755 in old Bladen County, English Province of North Carolina [now Robeson County, North Carolina]. Died date unknown on old Harrisburg County, Texas [now Harris County, Texas]. Married Richard Vince Sr. RS-SC about 1784-1785 in Screven County, Georgia. Husband was the brother of Captain Joseph Vince RS-SC.
iii. |
David Strickland, born about 1756 in old Bladen County, English Province of North Carolina [now Robeson County]. Died date unknown in Wayne County, Georgia. Married Elizabeth ??? (surname unknown) in old Bladen County, English Province of North Carolina [now Robeson County].
iv. |
Joel Joseph Strickland, born about 1758 in old Bladen County, English Province of North Carolina [now New Hanover County, North Carolina]. Died about 1835 in Wayne County, Georgia. Married his 1st cousin Elizabeth Strickland about 1789 in old Darlington County (i.e., the old Cheraws Nest settlement, Cheraws District), South Carolina. Joel may have been married before marrying his wife Elizabeth. After his father's death in Robeson County, North Carolina, Joel apparently moved and took over his brother John's lands in Darlington, South Carolina - - and then later migrated with his family to Georgia. |
312. Martin Fuchs (Futch), born about 1711 in New Bern, old Archdale Precinct, English Province of North Carolina. Died March 17, 1767 in Craven County, English Province of North Carolina. Isabella ??? about 1732-1734 and most likely in old Craven Precinct, English Province of North Carolina.
313. Isabella ??? (nee: unknown), born in date and place unknown. Died after April 17, 1767, and most like while living with her son in old Orangeburgh District, English Province of South Carolina.
Child of Martin Futch and his wife Isabella ??? is (there may have been more
children):| 156 | i. | Onesimus Futch Sr. , RS-NC/SC, born about 1735 in Craven Precinct, old Bath County, English Province of North Carolina. Died about 1831 at his "Statesborough" Plantation home, in lower SE Bulloch County, Georgia. Buried in the old and destroyed Futch Family Cemetery [now under water], Bulloch Bay, SE Bulloch County, Georgia. Married 157. Anne Duke(s) about 1756 in Orangeburgh District, English Province of South Carolina. Before his death the family owned and operated a number of large plantations and acreage in Bulloch, Tattnall, and Bryan Counties, Georgia. Descendants say that members of his family bred large herds of farm horses and mules in Bryan County, Georgia - - and that all of the plow mules in that area of Georgia were called "Futch Mules" and purchased from one of his plantations in southwestern Bryan County, Georgia. I feel that it is noteworthy to mention that Onesimus Sr. and his three oldest sons were Honorable Revolutionary Soldiers in the English Provinces of North and South Carolina. |
320. Henry O'Steen, born between 1700-1705 in England or Craven Precinct, Bath County, English Province of North Carolina. Died 1754 in Carteret County, English Province of North Carolina. Married 321. Margaret McCullough about 1724-1725 in Carteret County, English Province of North Carolina.
321. Margaret McCullough, born about 1703 in county unknown, English Province of North Carolina. Died between 1725-1730 in Carteret County, English Province of North Carolina.
Child of Henry O'Steen and his wife Margaret McCullough is (probably were
more children):| 160 | i. | Thomas O'Steen Sr. , born 1725 in Craven Precinct, Bath County, English Province of North Carolina [part was cut into Carteret County, English Province of North Carolina]. Died 1794 in North Carolina or South Carolina. Married ??? (name unknown) between 1742-1744 in Carteret County, English Province of North Carolina. |

523. Susannah Batchelor, born about 1632 in Jamestown, near Boston, English Massachusetts Bay Colony. Married ??? (name unknown), in Charleston, near Boston, English Massachusetts Bay Colony. She was the daughter of 1046. William Batchelor and his wife 1047. Jane ??? (nee: unknown), of Jamestown and Charleston, near Boston, English Massachusetts Bay Colony.
| NOTE TO DENMARK FAMILY RESEARCHERS: The above family connection to Susannah Batchelor and her parents is a recent find shared by our Stephen D. Denmark, of Seattle, Washington. Up until this new information was discovered, descendants thought that the "Batchelor" used in the name of our ancestor William Batchelor Denmark Jr. RS-NC (circa 1740-c1805) was a nickname, rather than a family name - - and that he was probably so nicknamed for a bachelor's lifestyle in his younger years. Thanks to researcher Stephen D. Denmark we learned that the "Batchelor" in his name is the maiden name of his maternal grandmother Susannah Batchelor (b. c1632), and his maternal Great-grandfather William Batchelor. Another good find by our cousin Stephen D. Denmark is the connection of our North Carolina Denmark's to the Boston area of Massachusetts. Especially significant is the find that our William's brother John Denmark RS-PA/MA (b.c1738) fought and survived the famous Battle of Bunker Hill, near Boston, Massachusetts, and the Battle of Long Island, New York at the beginning of the Revolutionary War. We all owe a big "thanks" to cousin Stephen D. Denmark for sharing these findings. |

545. Mary ??? (nee: unknown), born about 1650, place unknown.
| NOTE TO
BIRD FAMILY RESEARCHERS: Our Georgia "Bird" ancestors originate from this
Dutch "Bort/Bordt" family, and our roots go back to North Holland,
Netherlands. Up until this recent finding, researchers identified our Georgia Birds as
being English and/or Scots, and linked to the House of Stewart,
Scotland. We now
know this isn't true, and that they were Dutch and that our ancestors were among the first
Dutch Reformed Church (Palatine) migrants to settle in North America. Evidently
their surname was anglicized by English officialdom, and the surname
"Bort/Bordt" is probably equivalent to "Bird," as translated by
English officials of the time. Also note that the location where they originally settled, called "New Towne," was the original Dutch Reform Church landing and settlement area belonging to the Dutch West India Company, and one of the first Dutch New Netherland settlements in America. At the time this town straddled both sides of what is now named "Newtown Creek". This creek a good sized a body of flowing water off the East River, and it physically separates Queens County (Long Island) and Kings County (Brooklyn), New York City, New York. That part of old New Towne on the Long Island side is now present day "Long Island City," while the land on the Brooklyn side is now the "Greenpoint" District of Brooklyn. [Aside: Bragging tidbits for those interested: "Greenpoint" Brooklyn, Kings County, New York is where Hollywood's East Side Kids supposedly resided. That part of Brooklyn has traditionally been called the "Da Garden Spot of da Woild" . . . as the smart aleck "Muggs" McGinnis (Leo Gorcey, Actor) said in one of his many circa 1930-40s "East Side Kids" movie pictures. Also, historically Greenpoint is the riverfront area of Brooklyn from which many of General George Washington's troops escaped across the East River to upper Manhattan Island after being defeated by the British in the Battles of Long Island and Brooklyn Heights. Another claim to fame tidbit is that the famous U. S. S. Civil War Ironclad "Monitor" was built in Greenpoint. Just thought you'd like to know. Returning to the subject: Our Andreas Bort Sr. (c1650-1723) was our family's first Dutch immigrant to America. He and his family were part of the original Dutch Reform Church settlers that pre-dated English rule over New Amsterdam (New York City), Fort Orange (Albany), New York, and Raritan, Somerset County, New Jersey. Later large numbers of these Dutch Reform Church settlers (our Bird Family included) migrated from "New Towne" New York area, to the Raritan, New Jersey area, and then to locations surrounding what is now Birdsboro, Berks County, Pennsylvania. What is so amazing about all this is that our Dutch "Bird" ancestors lived circa 1650-1671 in the very same area of Brooklyn, New York where I was born and raised . . . some 350 years later. I had no prior knowledge of this . . . so someone tell me this is not a big-time coincidence! For those readers who get confused when reading the birth, marriage, and death dates of the 2 nd and 5th children listed below, keep in mind that control over the New York City area dynamically switched back and forth between the Dutch and English between 1609-1674. If you study New York State history, you'll find that whoever had the most war ships in the harbor, along with the most soldiers and muskets - - owned the area called "New Amsterdam" [New York City]. |

| NOTE TO FUTCH FAMILY RESEARCHERS: Although there are two other individuals found surnamed "Futsch" and "Fuch," before and after Jacob arrived in the New World, this Jacob Fuchs (1686-c1747) is identified as our first FUTCH to migrate in late 1710 with Baron Christopher de Graffenried's original German settlers to the English Province of Virginia. This group of immigrants first landed in SE Virginia, traveled overland to the English Province of North Carolina, and established the original German settlement in New Bern, old Archdale Precinct (location became part of Craven County in 1739), English Province of North Carolina. As far as we now know, Jacob is the ascendant of all old timey FUTCH descendants that migrated from North Carolina to South Carolina, Georgia, Florida, Alabama, Mississippi, Louisiana, and Texas. It is unknown whether Jacob participated in the Tuscarora Indian War (1711-1715), the War of Jenkin's Ear (1739-1744), King George's War (1744-1748), or if one or more of Jacob's sons served in the military during the Revolutionary War (circa 1776-1785). Evidently the German surname "Fuchs" (pronounced fast as "fee-yukes" in England) was anglicized by English officialdom to the surname variants of "Futsche," "Futche," and "Futch". |

List of Credits, Contributors, and Primary References
In 1946, when I was ten years old, I vividly recall wondering: "Where did my family come from?" I was then in a Catholic orphanage and almost all of my friends were orphans or abandoned street kids who knew more about their ancestry than I did. About the only thing I knew at that time was that my father and grandparents were from somewhere called "Georgia." For years afterward I focused on anything in writing, e.g., history books, magazine articles, etc., that mentioned the State of Georgia. I guess I did that to fill that "big black hole" in my soul, a part of me that was always missing. It's a feeling that I'm sure is hard to understand by anyone raised in a "normal" home - - and who had any kind of a "stable" family life. The few times that I visited my aunt Maria's home (my estranged father's sister), I would seek out and talk with my father's brother, my Uncle Jim Wise - - who kept me spellbound and stirred my imagination with tales of his childhood experiences in and around the old town of Clyde (formerly Eden), Bryan County, and in Savannah, Chatham County, Georgia.
It was my Uncle Jim who gave this street "urchin" from "Greenpernt" (i.e., Greenpoint) Brooklyn any idea of what it was like to live, hunt, fish, and grow up as every boy should. I recall one time Uncle Jim said that he disliked living in the "hustle-and-bustle" of New York City . . . and that he yearned to retire from his high pressure job in Manhattan (New York City) and return and live in the old Grandpa Jake Wise plantation big-house near Clyde (formerly Eden), Bryan County, Georgia. Uncle Jim said that he had some of the happiest and cherished times of his childhood at the old Jake Wise Plantation, how as a little boys he and his brother Bob (my father) would spend the summers at the old Grandpa Jake plantation house, and how his many Wise, Hobbs, and Strickland uncles and older cousins took them fishing at Rice Landing, and hunting in the thick woods surrounding Clyde, Georgia. If were possible, said Uncle Jim, he could easily just sat back and rock on the porch of that old plantation "bighouse," adjust his old and favorite crumpled Panama hat on his head, sip on a cold Mint Julep . . . and just watch the world go by. He said that he knew there would be nothing but a feeling of peace and contentment in his soul if he could do that. It's almost 60 years since my beloved Uncle Jim told me that . . . and now that I'm retired myself, I can relate to what he said . . . I now know exactly what Uncle Jim was telling me.
Also, please understand that there is no way I can continuously compile so much information on my family without the help of so many "kuz'ns" -- who either published materials on our family, or who share their personal family information with me. I must thank Mr. Bob Neibling (no relation) for introducing me to the best hobby (family genealogy) that I ever had. I just can't find words to explain how this hobby helped me maintain my sanity during some of the roughest emotional and loneliest times in my adult life, i.e., my emotionally devastating divorce from an unfaithful wife, the deaths of my most precious mother, brothers, close childhood and adult friends, the loss of so many buddies in South Viet Nam, etc. I just know that genealogy is God's special gift for people like me.
And, of course, a special-special-special thanks goes to my cousin Chickie DeLuca of Brentwood, Long Island, New York, my newly-found Southern cousins, e.g., the late Poppa Wise of Richmond Hill, Georgia., Bonnie Gay of Statesboro, Georgia., Carolyn Jarrard and Ocie Davis of Bloomingdale, Georgia., Al Chassereau of Savannah, Georgia., the late Elmer O. Parker of Columbia, South Carolina, Roy Shipman of Texas, and a precious family researcher (Strickland/Collins) Mrs. Nannette Long of Yorkville, Illinois. To all who helped me find the family I never had as a child, I thank each and every one of you from the bottom of my heart. You'll never know how each of you helped fill a big black hole that has been in my soul since childhood.
MEMORIUM for Cousin Joe Buhler, of Bryan County,
Georgia

I can't wrap up this web page without mention of a cousin who, like my Uncle Jim, struck me as profoundly proud of his Georgia heritage: Mr. JOSEPH (JOE) LINTON BUHLER, SR. Joe died as result of a shocking and tragic automobile accident, just hours after chaperoning me around family home sites and cemeteries in Georgia, and about three hours after leaving cousin Al Chassereau's home in Savannah, Georgia. Through his mother's bloodline Joe Buhler and I were fourth cousins (one generation removed).
Just two days before his tragic accident, Joe provided me with a guided tour around the sites of upper Bryan County and lower SE Bulloch County, Georgia. What struck me was that Joe knew everyone in his hometown, Pembroke, Bryan County, Georgia. He introduced me to the Mayor and some of the city fathers in the restaurant his family once owned, and where we ate breakfast with them on two consecutive mornings. We drove around his part of Bryan County to give me an idea how and where he was raised, and how nice a place is his hometown. Joe showed me the old local fishing and swimming holes, the local schools he attended, the local cemeteries where many our relatives are buried, the city library, city hall, and the old home sites where our original Bryan County families settled and lived. Joe truly made it an "Uncle Remus" and "back to the past" trip for me. And it didn't take me long to realize, compared to my childhood in New York City, the quality of life Joe and the people of his hometown had in their childhood - - and still have right now. How I envy all of you.
Joe also guided me around the Red Hill and Bulloch Bay areas of lower Bulloch County, near the Bryan and Bulloch County line, i.e., to locations where my Georgia Futch and Strickland ancestors had their plantations. After that, Joe drove me around the back roads of Lower Black Creek, Bryan County, where my Harvey and Bird ancestors had their plantations. Joe knew where everything was that I was searching for. What a tour.
I only knew Joe Buhler since January 1992, but it didn't take me long to realize that he was truly a person of quality and true southern gentility -- and truly one of my kind of people. I'm glad I met this unforgettable man, and I'm proud to let the world know he was my cousin. People of Pembroke, Bryan County, Georgia, you did a good job raising Joe. Your Joe Buhler was a true "Southern Gentleman." The U.S., the South, the State of Georgia, Bryan County, and the City of Pembroke can all be proud of their son: JOSEPH LINTON BUHLER SR, Chief Master Sergeant, Georgia Air National Guard and U. S. Air Force Reserve -Retired. He sure was proud of you.
