It is impossible to fix the exact date, because his mother died while he was quite young and the family record was lost, but he was about 67 years old. After his mother's death, he lived with his grandmother for a while, and when she died, he made his home with a sister, leaving that home after staying there for a season. At the very early age of 12 years, during the Civil War, his two older brothers, who had entered the Confederate Army and lost their lives in the war, persuraded him to run away and go where they were. He became a dummmer boy, and while with the soldiers received a severe wound in the shoulder. Comming home after the war ended, he drifted to Augusta, Ga., having been converted in early life, and it was in this city he felt impressed that he ought to preach, and was licensed to do so. In 1880, at the Conference at Rome, Ga., he was received on trial, was ordained Deacon in 1883, by Bishop Pierce, and was ordained Elder in 1885 by Bishop Wilson. On December 27, 1893, he and Miss Florence Hill, of Rome, Ga., were married by Rev. George W. His health gradually failing this year he was compelled to go to Wesley Memorial Hospital for examanation and treatment, and there submitted to a major surgical operation, which disclosed very serious internal troubles.
