Chapter 10: Solid Foundations
This relatively short but important chapter covers foundations. It is crucial that your foundation meet both the minimum requirements of the manufacturer and your county code. Although the types of foundation vary across the country, some general guidelines are given. Among the important rules: never place a home on concrete that hasn’t set for at least three days, always have the foundation at least as deep as the frost penetration line (a US frost penetration map is included), always double-check the proper location of footers, and always have a foundation beneath brick underpinning. General site preparation is also discussed and illustrated (how to crown and grade your lot), as well as specific problems that can develop from poorly made foundations.
