JEWELRY CHEST
This Jewelry chest utilizes scolloped trim on all of the doors. Sort of a pain to make but I think they enhance the beauty of the chest. The major wood is basswood with walnut trim, base and top.
The overall height is 13.125 inches, width is 17.5 inches, and the depth is 9.25 inches. Although the photos do not show it, the chest has 2 doors on each side that covers the necklace hanger area. These doors are angled and the carving covers the entire angles surface. The carved front doors cover 4 carved drawers. All drawers insides are coated with a felt flocking material. All doors are kept closed with magnets. All construction and carving drawings were made on AutoCad. The finish is 6 coats of spray-on polyurethane. Construction time is about 40 hours and carving time is around 100 hours.

JEWELRY BOX
This has been a popular piece - must have made over a dozen. The box body is made of basswood and the lid is walnut with a raised basswood panel. The box is 12"long x 4" high x 6.5" wide. The wood thickness is 1/2 inch. I have use cherry and mahogny with the basswood and all versions look nice. The lid dimensions are 12" long by 7" wide. The carving design was done in AutoCad. A .25" square walnut piece was inlaid in the top edges of the box before the mitre cuts were made. A brass lid support was added in the upper left corner. The finish is 6 coats of polyurethane spray. The piece is sanded with 0000 steel wool beteen each coat. Time to make and carve runs from 12 hours up to 30 hours depending on the complexity of the carving design.
This piece is a unique design in which the drawers are place in both sides and a mirror set in a wood oval is hidden behind carved front doors. This is a 8 sided stave constructed bowl that required compound cuts and was a tough job to cut and glue. It turned out OK; however it started out a bit larger. Major wood is basswood and trim is walnut. The overall height is 10.75 inches. The diameter of the base is 8 inches. The height of the bottom bowl is 6 inches and height of the lid is 3.75 inches. The finish is 6 fine coats of polyurethane with a lite steel wooling between coats. The construction time is about 40 hours and the carving time about 60 hours. carve.

This piece has been a real winner in competition. I call it a DeskKaddy and feel it would look really nice is an office. It is quite large being 20.5 inches wide, 15 inches high and 10.625 inches deep. It contains mail slots on each side and drawers in the center. All these are covered by heavily carved doors. Along the top are 3 more drawers. The entire front of the piece is made on a 47.5 inch radius. The major wood is basswood with a butternut base and butternut fronts on the upper three drawers. Magnets hold the 4 front doors closed. All construction design and carving designs was done with AutoCad. The constuction time is over 80 hours due to the complexity. I stopped counting the carving hours at about 150. The finish is 6 coats of poloyurethane spray with a fine steel wooling between coats. All drawer insides are coated with a wine colored felt flocking material.
This is one of those pieces that you only want to make once! Construction was one of the toughest projects ever! The entire front of the piece is made on a 12.5 inch radius which required many jigs for cuting and glueing. The drawer fronts and the upper strip are made of 4 plies of .125 inch thick basswood strips clamped in forms. The overall height is 20 inches and width is 25 inches. The curved front made cutting the drawer dovetails fun. In addition, each drawer is fitted with full extension wood slides. The large doors on the sides were set in a special jig to allow rocking the entire door over my table saw fitted with a 1 inch dado blade. The top lid lifts to reveal a large storage area. This compartment, the drawer insides and the necklace hanging areas are coated with a red felt flocking material. In spite of all the difficult construction, it did turn out very nice and won a Best Of Show in competition. Again, all construction design and carving designs were done with AutoCad. Finish is 6 coats of spray on polyurethane with a light steelwooling between coats. I do not remember the contruction hours but it was a lot. The carving took about 130 hours.
These are pedestal bowls that were made for gifts to friends. They are easy to make but can take a long time to make. These particular bowls are made of basswood with walnut bases. The bowls and bases are 8 side stave construction and turned on the wood lathe.
The overall height is approximately 10 inches and the diameter is approximately 6 inches. To get some variety, some of the bowl sections were tapered. The finish is 4 coats of polyurethane spray. Steel wood between coats with 0000 steel wool. Carving time runs from 8 to 12 hours.
While I have be woodworking for many years, this table was one of my early chip carved pieces. It was made in the late 80's and for some reason it never made it to the website. The table is constructed of basswood and stands 30 inches high. The top is 13.5 incheswide X 12.5 inches deep. The botton plate is 11 inches across the flat sides. The top and bottom plates have .25 inch thick basswood trim on all sides that is proud on the top side to allow the insertion of a glass protective cover of the carving. I do not remember how much time to construct and carve. The finish was 4 coats of spray on polyurethane.
This is another table that was made in my early days of chip carving. It is similiar to the Big Table above; however it is slightly smaller and has some walnut trim on the top and bottom plates. The table was a gift to a family member and I have lost the detail drawings. As I recall the approximate height is 30 inches. The table top is approx 11 inches by 11 inches and the bottom plate is 8 inches across the flats. Finish is 4 coats of polyurethane.

SMALL PEDESTAL TABLE

One of my other hobbies is golf. Although I am not very good at it, I have been lucky enough to get an eagle and a hole-in-one. Having accepted the fact that I will never win a trophy, I decided to make one and award it to myself. This was a tough project - particular the upper bowl with the conpound cuts of the 12 staves. The major wood is basswood and the trim wood is walnut. The overall height is 25 inches. The upper bowl is 10 inches high and the widest diameter is 11 inches. The pedestal section body is 8 inches high and 6 inches in diameter. One major problem with the upper bowl design is that all carving designs have to be hand drawn directly on the wood. This process can take many hours. The construction time was about 80 hours and the carving time was another 80 hours. The finish is 6 coats of spray on polyurethane.
