Giant Roof Spider

Lurking on the garage roof is the Giant Roof Spider!

It all started with an old lawn chair I 'borrowed' from the neighbor's trash pile.

10 foot septic tubing from Home Depot formed the legs.

The legs were halved then cut into a rough 'leggy' shape.

Had to make little spidery feet!

The chair was covered in plastic garden fencing...

... and formed into the basic spider body shape.

Halloween projects wouldn't exist if not for duct tape!

The black coating is weed-guard stuff that I had in the garage.

The finished spider, still on the deck.

No that's not a smiley face though it looks like one.

The eyes were halves of clear plastic pumpkins.

I sprayed the underside of the eyes with glow-in-the-dark paint so they would catch under black light.

Our dog Ursula checks out the spider!

"Roinks!!! That's gonna take at least 10 minutes to eat," thinks Ursula.

Halloween night, the spider is hoisted to the roof of the garage, victims in place.

I had trouble getting the black light I wanted up on the garage so I made a last minute decision to not use it.

Instead I threw a strobe up there. The effect worked well enough.

Day shots the next day...

So what did I learn from the Giant Spider?

Well, that when you haven't done Halloween in awhile there are about a million things to get done and some projects won't come out as hoped for due to time contraints. I *was* happy with the spider, but its far from how I envisioned it. I started earlier for the 2005 season and tweaked the spider to get it closer to my original plan.
