Jack the Pumpkin King

Jack and I spend a haunting moment together. I'm 6' 3"... he's a tall bugger!

Like many of you I love 'The Nightmare Before Christmas' so I thought I'd do a scarecrow of Jack Skellington as the Pumpkin King, as seen in the opening 'This Is Halloween' musical number.

After finding the PERFECT jack-o-lantern head at Big Lots I knew I could pull off a great Skellington!

PVC skeleton, baby!

I *did* draw out some proportion plans as not to wing it TOO much. Got to be flexible though.

Testing the head fit.

I didn't want a static pose though the character was not to be animated.

The torso was fitted out same as the spider with plastic gardening fence.

Jack comes inside! I bought a big bag of raffia from GardenRidge and set about glueing and tying. Trust me when I say it was a pain in the butt keeping it all in place!

The coat was cut from two major fabric pieces then I hand sewed it onto Jack's body. There was NO way in heck that I'd be able to get those skinny sleeves over those long arms.

Outdoors at last. Two metal rods were hammered into the ground and Jack's PVC legs placed over then. A single rod was attached off the back of one of the legs due to a stability issue.

I love this shot. Jack's head bhad no internal lighting- this was just sunlight showing through the relatively thin resin that the pumpkin was constructed of.

Halloweentown sign added in background for good measure.

The hands were stiff fencing wire bent and duct taped into shape, then stuffed with rolled-up Wal-Mart bags and finally wrapped with another duct tape layer.

The hands are posable to some degree. I painted them while on the figure with spray paint.

Jack had his own lights to set him apart from the rest of the yard.

Good view of the sign and here you can see his leg support.

That's the real full moon, shot with a long exposure with only a street light for ambient lighting.

Jack the Pumpkin King actually surpassed how I had hoped he would come out! I can't wait to set him up next year!

As Hanibal (no, not THAT one) used to say- "I love it when a plan comes together"
