Foreword and Acknowledgements

The history of an organization is the foundation on which it builds, and the members are its assets. Milestones, anecdotes on events, and achievements and contributions of club members are part of the club lore. In this account, we acknowledge the efforts of the pioneering members of the Fort Lauderdale Orchid Society, and the story is told in the hope that no one's contribution has been overlooked.

Some information came from scrapbooks and notebooks, compiled by founding member, James Bloom, and by lifetime member, Julian Haywood. Along with the photographs and newspaper clippings, there were copies of past newsletters. Other papers and the recollections of long-time members, both current and no longer active, helped form the balance of the story.

1. The Founders and the First Meeting

During the last part of May in 1951, the record shows May 31st to be particularly important, there was/were discussions between Primo Buso, Johnny Edwards, Ed Thomasen and Jim Bloom at Bloom's Nursery as to whether there should be a club or an organization for orchid hobbyists in the Fort Lauderdale area. It was decided to give the idea a try, and on June 6, 1951, the first meeting of the Fort Lauderdale Orchid Society was held at the home and nursery of James and Leona Bloom. The nursery was located a half-mile north of Searstown, and today is part of Middle River Terrace Park. Those present were Johnny Edwards (pres. 55-56), Primo Buso (pres. 56-57), Ed Thomasen, Ed Gilman, and Jim, Leona and Gary Bloom. (Morgan McJunkin and Dr. Willard Machle were to be at the first meeting but had prior commitments.)

The meeting had been scheduled and announced for Tuesday the 5th, but with several of the group unable to attend, it was postponed until Wednesday evening. (Unfortunately, there were still no-shows on Wednesday--Machle and McJunkin.) Before and after the meeting, Primo Buso and Jim Bloom discussed having someone with a title, such as a doctor, as the first president of the society. With this in mind, it was decided that Dr. Machle was the ideal choice. The next afternoon, Thursday, the 7th, Bloom notified Dr. Machle as to the decision by telephone. Dr. Machle approved, and accepted the position as the society's first president. On Saturday, the 9th, Dr. Machle visited the nursery to discuss the plan with Bloom, and it went forward from there. The second meeting was held (with the first plant table) at Dr. Machle's home, on the 18th of June.
