Kahn/Rastad Families

Isadore Kahn emigrated from Riga, Latvia some time in the late 1800s (possibly in 1895) with his parents. They settled in Rochester, NY where Isadore met his wife Dora Schoenberg who had emigrated with her parents and 9 brothers and sisters. They married sometime before 1903 and moved to St. Paul, MN in 1905, where they lived for the rest of their lives. Isadore was a tailor who owned his own shop.

Thorvald and Hanna Olefina Rastad emigrated from Christiania (Oslo) Norway with their oldest daughter Winnie on the ship "Hellig Olav". They arrived in the US for the first time on Feb 8, 1905. They were accomanied by a friend (also a joiner), N W Olsen (age 31) and they were all going to stay with Thorvald's brother-in-law John O. Haugen. By 1918, they were living in Leland, IA in Winnebago County.

Leland is a very small town with a population of 311. The major products of the town are corn and soybeans, although Winnebago County is the home of Winnebago Industries, maker of the most popular motor homes. Winnebago County is also the birthplace of Iowa's former Governor Terry Branstad.
