Thomas Command and Teresa Ridell

The Commands came from Tralee, Ireland in County Kerry, Trughanamacy Barony, Munster Province. Their original family name, Commane, was changed to Command after arrival in the United States.

The name Commane is rare in Ireland, and is concentrated in the eastern part of County Kerry. It comes from the Irish O'Comain. The linking page provides a great deal of information about the various forms the name has taken, including: Commons, Comyns, Kimmons, Commane, MacSkimmins and Hurley

The first Commands arrived May 4, 1849 in Baltimore, MD on the ship the Jeanie Johnston. They came during the worst of the Great Famine, when the population of Ireland was reduced from 8 to 5 million through death and emigration.
