In the section marked Math Curves, I have constructed a mechanical device for drawing the three curves of the Trochoid Family - Cycloid, Prolate Cycloid, and Curtate Cycloid. These curves are generated by tracing a point on a circle that rolls on a straight line. In my animations of these curves, the yellow gear causes the green rack to move in a straight line while a point on the gear traces the curve on a transparent screen, attached to the rack. A similar device is used to generate the sine and cosine curves. A complete description of their operation is included on the sine/cosine pages.
