But being aware that one is emulating various behaviors forces this self-awareness on autistic folks.

And why is that considered “too much”? Unless maybe it’s being in and outside of the situation simultaneously.

In an uncertain situation, might an autistic individual retreat farther inside, then send his/her “role” out as a proxy? This may expand the traditional definition of “role”...

What the hell do they mean “demand too much”? I can’t not do this. Would neurotypical configurations become overloaded or something? Perhaps some of us have reduced-instruction-set processors which are better able to handle this type of operation.
